I used to strongly dislike the whole 'Indie' scene - Arctic Monkeys, Muse, The Kooks, Kasabian etc. - especially when I got into a huge argument with my friend about the quality of Aussie and US music - at the time my music library consisted mainly of bands like JET, Green Day, Maroon 5, Evermore, Thirsty Merc, Fall Out Boy etc. - so he gave me a list of bands to listen to from the Indie side of things, mainly the ones listed.
Because I got the songs from Limewire they were occasionally of bad quality - too loud, too soft, wrong song etc. - and so understandably I still wasn't too keen on them. The closest we got to agreeing on music was me saying that The Killers were good and he agreed.
I had a few friends over at some point and I wanted to put on music I thought they'd like, so I chucked on The Kooks randomly, and I really liked the song, so I listened to the rest of their songs that I had, and then I got more.
I'd liked some Muse initially - Time Is Running Out and Knights of Cydonia notably - so I borrowed their 'Absolution' album from school and downloaded it to my iPod, and grabbed all of Blackholes And Revelations from torrent and kind of liked that. Gradually I begun to like the bands more, and really quite like Kasabian's new album.
I guess what it comes down to is that your musical taste can gradually change over time with an over-exposure to certain genres. I'd like to say my taste has matured - though I still love all the stuff I used to like - I guess I have a very broad musical taste now, which I think is better than being like my friend and only liking the 'good' stuff, because it means more often than not I'll enjoy what comes on the radio.
Abslutely love Muse now though, cannot get enough of them. _________________
