Jon sat in his bunk, staring at the ceiling. Thoughts and memories swirled through his mind. It was always like this the night before an operation. There was always that what if. What if you get your men killed? What if you screw up the entire operation?
He was interupted by a loud snore one bunk down. It was some what comforting to hear Pops snor. In the top bunk across the room the ongoing thump thump meant that studd was still awake playing wall ball with himself.
"Studd you awake?" Silence for acouple seconds before
"Yeah. Why?"
"Do you still get nervous before a fight?" Stidd gave out a barking laugh.
"Hell ya!" Jons' morale went up a little bit.
He layed back down and continued staring at the wall. How long had it been since the last operation? A month, two? It was hard to keep track. How long had it been since he had lost a man? Jon didn't like to think about it. He closed his eyes and waited for sleep to come.
The smell of fresh grass flowed through him as he charged. He looked to his side to see a green twi'lek named Flou running beside him. A smile broke out across the twi'leks face.
"What?" Jon asked, a smile cracking his face as well.
"Nothing, just, well it's our first real operation." This was all Jon had been thinking about for the past twentyfour hours.
"Ya, I know." Jon began to pant. They must have ran onehundred yards by now.
"How long do you think we've been runn..." The crack of laser fire filled the air.
Jon turned his attention back to the hill. Red flashes popped up along the hill. A large thud sounded next to him. Jon turned back to his sdie again. Flou was no longer there. He stopped and turned to look to his friend. About fifthteen feet behind him the body layed sprawled on the floor.
Jon ran towards the body. Just as he was six meters from his friend a mortar round landed directly on the body. Jon was thrown through the air. He landed ten yards from the point of contact. Slowly he sat up. Scanning the feild for his friend. All he saw was a deep crater in the ground.
All of the sounds in the world were drowned out by a ringing in his ear. Some one grabed him by his shoulder and pulled him to his feet. It was the sarge.
"Keep moving soldier."
Jon sat straight up covered in sweat. He was back in the bunk room. It was still sleep cycle. Studd was asleep for the continual thump thump of of his one player game of wall ball had stopped. Jon layed back down. The event he had just reanacted had been his first operation. So many of his friends had died on that day. He closed his eyes and fell into a dreamless sleep.
