Apparently we just missed it, but either the 5th or 6th of October marked the 10 year anniversary of the largest ever Star Wars series.

What are your first memories of it? Of the highs - Ben Skywalker's birth - and the lows - Chewbacca and Anakin Solo's deaths - and how did they effect you? Is it a series that you've effectively 'grown up with' as I have, or is it something you've only ever heard of in passing and had no interest to read?

I'm tired.

That's how I feel about NJO.

Chewbacca died?!?!Ah!?!?!!??!!??!?!?!!

Nah, I knew that.  I've only skipped around in the series, I really should get a couple more books to read.  Alas, Lazy Dakoth is lazy.  It was pretty sad when Anakin got pwn't though.

Anakin's death reeked as futile and pointless to me, not only in the series, but in the way that he was only killed because Lucas didn't want to confuse people as the Clone Wars franchise, centred on Skywalker, ramped up.

Still, a great series.

Killing Chewie was just a massive kick in the teeth, similar to the death of Wash in 'Serenity' or erm... Hedwig in the Harry Potter series...

Just not necessary, although I suppose he did die a hero.

Hedwig in HP was completely unecessary only because she killed others in that book and it reeked of, "Oh look at me, I can kill whoever I want." It'd be like killing Droma.

Killing Chewie would be more akin to killing Hagrid. It's not quite as necessary or logical as killing Anakin/Jacen/Jaina, or Ron/Hermione, but it's the death of a guardian of sorts, and that's what kills hope and bursts a bubble of invincibility.

I actually haven't read any of the NJO, although I wouldn't be surprised if I did now that I'm waiting for the rest of FotJ.

Well the thing is that after the Wash example, I couldn't really think of another one, so the death of Hedwig was the only one I could really think of.

Well I have no idea who Wash is which is why I focussed on Hedwig. Razz

Graaah? I thought you'd seen Firefly/Serenity?

Watch it!

Also, it doesn't really feel like 10 years since NJO began, but it does feel like 10 years since Episode I was released. Strange, that.

Haha nope, though a few guys in my year seem to love it.

Yeah my sister and I recently re-watched all six Star Wars movies over a couple of days, and had to blow the dust off our old VHS player to watch TPM. I subsequently tried to find the DVD version in stores but couldn't.

Watching it again amazes me at all the reveals if you're watching it the first time - seeing Obi-Wan in essentially the opening scene, seeing Yoda on the Jedi Council, 3PO being created by Anakin, R2 saving the Naboo ship.

Honestly, watching it the first time I think it would have been awesome, but now not so...
