(Wow, this system turned into alot more work than I expected. It's hard to make a battle system without using dice!)
Well, I've been quite proud of everyone from both the Sith and Jedi (and Grey Jedi and Bounty Hunter I suppose ) boards getting along so well and roleplays not degrading into flamewars or such. But let's face it: Sometimes it's hard to decide who wins a fight, how it happened, who won, who died, who got hit, who blocked, who dodged... And for both people to agree.
With that in mind, and resolving conflicts in a civilized fashion, I present to you the Prototype/Alpha version of the dueling system. It will be greatly expanded beyond this incarnation. But this will give you an idea of where it is now and where it's heading.
This is the very first version, so some things are incomplete or confusing of course.
First up, besides the above, what was the goal of the system?
1. To create a battle system that didn't rely on dice or some other random system.
2. To create a battle system that in some small way recreated the feel of the movies, that means lots of blocking, lots of clashing, and things can change in one fell swoop. Abillity to try to keep your opponent on their toes or be defensive
3. To create a fair and balanced system.
4. To lay the foundations for a future "Battle" system that wouldn't be restricted to 1 on 1 fights.
VERSION 0.1: Battle System
From the man who brought you the ranking system... And stuff.
It'll be confusing, but just so people don't go looking for it because I know it's what most of you care about, here's how lightsabers work.
The single-blade is the basic setup of course, balanced in offense and defense and offering no special modifier to special attacks with it.
Single Blade:________Offense_____Defense_____Special
Normal Stance_________5___________5__________0
Defensive Stance_______3___________7__________0
Offensive Stance_______7___________3__________0
The twin blades are weighted heavily to offense special attacks are harder to perform with it, esspecially if you try to use them defensively.
Twin Blades:________Offense_____Defense_____Special
Normal Stance_________8___________2__________2
Defensive Stance_______5___________5__________3
Offensive Stance______13__________-3__________1
The double or "staff" lightsaber is hindered in terms of base offense and defense, however it is a blade of skill, it reduces the cost of specials in all stances.
Double-Blade:_______Offense_____Defense_____Special
Normal Stance_________4___________4__________-1
Defensive Stance_______1___________6__________-3
Offensive Stance_______6___________1__________-3
Ok now that's that done with... Here comes so basic rules. Don't worry if you're confused. It'll become clear over time I hope
You recieve 10 active points per round.
These points can be spent to power your abillities, defences, and attacks (Abillities list coming... eventually)
Unused points may be "banked" for later use. This comes at a penalty however, you must spend an extra point for every point you bank. Thus:
2 Active points = 1 Bank Point
4 Active points = 2 Bank Points
6 Active points = 3 Bank Points
8 Active points = 4 Bank Points
10 Active points = 5 Bank Points
Turns consist of 4 event stages
1. Saber-Lock Responce
2. Defense
3. Saber-Lock Check
4. Attack
| Quote: | | The exception to the above rules is that the first player moving recieves only 5 active points for that round since there is no defence stage. |
The Attack Round
The Attack Round consists of powering the abilities you want to use against your opponent. With your active or banked points (or a combination of both).
You may power 2 seperate abillties/attacks per Attack Round.
Detailed Demonstration: Obi-Wan Vs. Anakin
(A bare-bones demonstration can be found below this post)
Since he is the first attacker, Obi-Wan gets 5 active points.
He places 3 points into a normal swing and 2 points into a force push.
It is then the opponents turn
Anakin sees the first thing he's supposed to do is Event Phase 1: "Saber-Lock Responce"... There was no saber-lock even possible last round because it was the opening move so it can be ignored.
He sees the next Phase is "Defense"
First Anakin looks at Obi-Wan's lightsaber type and his stance.
Obi-Wan is using a single lightsaber in a defensive stance, that gives him base line stats of...
Offense: 3 Defense: 7 Special: 0
Obi-Wan made a normal swing with 3 points invested into it.
His saber's offense score of 3 plus the 3 points invested into the swing during Kenobi's offense round equals 6 total attack points.
Anakin also sees Obi-Wan used a force push with 2 points invested in it.
Anakin checks his abillities guide (coming soon) and sees that a force push can be blocked most easily by simply using another force push of equal power. Anakin happens to be quite good at force push so he simply invests 2 of his 10 active points for the round into a defensive force push.
Defensive Force Push 2 - Offensive Push 2 = 0 = Blocked
Anakin has 8 active points left.
With that out of the way Anakin realizes he still has to do something about that 6 attack power swing Obi-Wan made.
Anakin checks his own saber and stance.
He's using a single bladed saber in a normal stance.
That gives him these base stats
Offense: 5 Defense: 5 Special: 0
Obi-Wan's total attack power is 6
Anakin's base defense power is 5
Due to how close the values are, this would start a Saber-Lock (explained later) in Obi-Wan's favor. Anakin doesn't want that!
Anakin doesn't feel like causing a saber-lock himself, so he invests three of his active points into his defense roll. This boosts his defense from 5 to 8 points total.
Anakin's defense of 8 - Obi-Wan's attack of 6 = 2
This causes Anakin to block the attack completely without a saber-lock because the round is heavily in his favor. And he still has 5 active points left to spend! He decides to plan ahead and spends 2 of his points to put 1 point in his energy bank.
Anakin now has 3 active points and 1 bank point and his "defense" round is over.
Anakin now moves into the Attack Phase. He decides to place all 3 of his active points into a normal swing.
Anakin now has 0 active points and 1 point in his energy bank.
His attack phase and turn are now over.
It is now Obi-Wan's turn again.
There was no Saber-Lock last round so Obi-Wan ignores the "Saber-Lock Responce" Phase and moves directly to defense.
Anakin is still swinging with his single saber in normal stance which gives him 5 base attack power, plus the 3 points he added to the wing adds to 8 total attack power.
Obi-Wan is still in a defensive stance with his single bladed saber giving him 7 base defense, as before. He would need to spend 3 points on defense to completely block Anakin's swing. Obi-Wan decides to try his luck in a Saber-Lock.
Obi-Wan spends 2 points on defense instead of the 3 required to block, this results in...
Obi-Wan's defense total: 9 - Anakin's attack total: 8 = 1
The round is a mere 1 point in Obi-Wan's favor this causes a Saber-Lock next round. Obi-Wan needs to decide what to do after that Saber-Lock though regardless of whether he wins or loses.
Obi-Wan decides to be very defensive and converts 6 of his points into 3 banked points and then invests 2 of these points into the Saber-Lock
He has 2 active points and 1 bank point.
He aplies his 2 active points to a normal swing.
It's Anakin's turn again. Obi-Wan caused a Saber-Lock last round so Anakin needs to respond.
The lock is currently 2 points in Obi-Wan's favor
Obi-Wan - 12 Anakin - 10
Saber-Lock Rules
Only banked energy points can be spend during saber-locks which is why Obi-Wan had to convert his active points into bank points first.
The outcome of the saber-lock occurs like this... If the final result is a tie, the two-opponents push off of eachother and neither takes damage from the lock.
If it ends unevenly however the results are a bit more complex...
The player with the most points obviously wins. What matters is how many points they won, the Lock converts to a percentage. A one point counts as 10%, 2 as 20% 3 as 30% etc etc etc.
You then take that precentage and apply it to the winning bid.
Anakin is a sore loser and decides to give the lock his all.
Anakin converts all 10 of his active points for the round into 5 bank points, he adds this to the one he stored in his last round for a total of 6 banked points. He then invests all 6 of these into the lock.
The blades continue to crackle against eachother as Anakin applies this extra strength resulting in...
Obi-Wan: 12 Anakin: 16
Anakin has won the Lock by 4 points! This converts to a 40% win which he then applies again his score...
Anakin's 16 multiplied by 40% (0.4) = 6.4 damage
This rounds down to 6 damage.
The saber-lock concludes with Obi-Wan recieving 6 damage.
Anakin's victory is short lived however as he realizes his defence round has arrived and Obi-Wan made a swing last round with 2 points behind it. Anakin has no active or banked points left to apply to defense.
(Obi-Wan's base offense is still 3 + 2 points added from the swing = 5 total attack points) - (Anakin's base defense of 5 + 0 points added from defense = 5 total points)
It balances out to 0 and results in another saber-lock next round.
Anakin has no banked points left to invest to swing the lock into his favor or to spend on his attack round.
Anakin's turn is over.
Obi-Wan sees his chance to avenge the damage he took last round so he lets the saber-lock stay at a balanced zero total. They both take no damage because they push off of eachother.
Anakin didn't attack so Obi-Wan skips the defense stage and preps to attack.
He spends 2 points to convert his stance from "Defensive" to "Offensive"
This changes his base stats from the Defensive...
Offense: 3 Defense: 7 Special: 0
To an Offensive
Offense: 7 Defense: 3 Special: 0
He then applies all 10 of his active points and his banked point into a normal swing resulting in...
Base 7 offense + 10 active points + 1 banked point = 18 total attack points
Obi-Wan's turn is over.
Anakin doesn't know defensive stance so he's forced to stay in his current "normal" stance. He considers putting all 10 of his active points into defense, but that would only total to (Base defense 5 + 10 active points = 15 defense total), he'd still lose by 3 and almost the same thing would happen next round... He would lose if he tried to keep that up, slowly but surely.
Seeing no other options, Anakin converts his points into 5 banked points, hoping he can turn things around starting next round with a full 15 points at his disposal. He braces himself for the round...
Obi-Wan: Offense: 18
Anakin: Defense: 5
Anakin recieves 13 damage
Anakin's turn is over
Obi-Wan's turn begins...
