But what if you could die?

While I'm often the first to say "stop worrying", this actually does bear a bit of discussion.

Specifically because the specific strain of this flu is especially dangerous to young adults (read: most members of this message board). Due to it causing a "Cytokine storm" - which, in layman's terms, means that the stronger your immune system is, the worse it will hit you.

Whereas the "normal" seasonal flu has a 1% mortality rate and hits the elderly the hardest, this is closer to 5-10% and hits people in their prime.

In 1918 a similar strain killed millions of people. Luckily, we have better tools to fight it now - however we also have much greater travel capabilities. Which is why this is spreading so quickly.

So I'm not going to say "stop worrying" - but I will say "don't worry too much yet". Wash your hands more often. Don't go to Mexico (where it's hitting the hardest - for now - they just shut down all of their school and public functions). And if you get these symptoms...

Don't got to work/school.

It might also be worth staying away from hospitals if you don't have those symptoms or something worse. That's your call.

I'm not scared. I have had the flu before and I can last another one. Out of all reported cases so far, only one person has been hospitalized.

A physician on CNN or something said that most people are coping with it easily with lots of rest and staying home.

I'm not as worried about it as I should be. Christopher's immune system is poor, does that mean it will hit him less?

Is that a challenge?

The lack of appetite thing for me is a big one, if I don't want to eat, something is terribly wrong.

I'm not an expert. It does make it possible that he wouldn't be hit as hard by the cytokine storm effect though.

Absolutely. This isn't Zombie-scale bio-outbreak. But this IS more dangerous than the normal seasonal flu.

There's no reason to not wash your hands a bit more than usual. This thing is still nasty and avoiding it is the best thing to do.

Don't be scared. Just be cautious.

With any luck, we'll get this contained - but that's going to be difficult with global travel. Mexico is getting hit the hardest (20 confirmed deaths, 26 confirmed cases, and thousands of suspected cases). They just shut down their schools and public functions today to try to stop the spread.

I have to say, I loved the advice that the American government were giving any visitors to Mexico.

"Please stay at least 5 feet away from everyone at all times"

Still, it's pretty terrible though, 85 deaths is a lot considering it was only discovered last friday. I wouldn't be worried though, but it's still tragic for the people of Mexico (Considering there is talk of quarantining the entire country).

Interesting note from Wikipedia (sourced to a "Cecil Textbook of Medicine, 21st Edition"), "Preliminary data from clinical trials involving patients with sepsis-induced ARDS have shown a reduction in organ damage and a trend toward improvement in survival (survival in ARDS is approximately 60%) after administering or upregulating a variety of free radical scavengers (antioxidants)."

ARDS being another disease causing cytokine storms in people with strong immune systems.

So, if you do get sick, taking some sort of Vitamin C supplement along with eating lots of fruits and vegetables is probably good advice. That's true with most diseases Laughing but especially here.

Yeah, same here. I don't even have a good diet and go outside to run in the pouring rain in low temperatures, and I rarely get sick. I've only had the flu once, and I got better fairly quickly.

As for this swine flu thing, I'm not worried....I've never had any desire to go to Mexico, anyway.

Really? Could have sworn over 200 people have died in Mexico...

Reported cases already in NSW.. scary listening to the radio yesterday in the morning when it was first announced as a potential threat but to be alert and not alarmed, to there being diagnosed cases close to home in the arvo!

Problem is Rive, I get a runny nose/cough almost daily due to allergies and the like, so it's hard for me to know!! Razz

If you start vomiting your brains out I think its safe to assume that you may be sick.
