As long as it's properly cooled and ventilated - no, there's no real danger of that.
Time isn't what makes a computer overheat - running the CPU/GPU too hard is. You're far, far, far, far more likely to see a computer overheat while running a game or watching an HD video than just sitting there doing nothing.
And, provided you aren't deliberately messing with your computer's BIOs settings to overclock it past its normal specs, I believe most modern computers are designed to do an emergency shutdown if they pass into the "danger zone".
You'd lose any unsaved work, but at least you're unlikely to see smoke  _________________
