Oh my, these have been dark months for me. The only two shows on TV I feel are worth watching (okay, I lie - since I also watch Heroes and Battlestar, but those are only only on a few weeks a year Smile ) had fallen into the abyss of reruns (which are rather pointless since the shows are based on the day's headlines).

But now, this is going to be interesting. I've just learned they're coming back this Monday... without writers. Or at least without their writers who went on strike - it's unclear if they had any writers who aren't participating in the strike.

I've heard a rumor that they're going to use the opportunity to make a point about the modern news media and simply report on the news without comedy, but also without glossing over the real stories and diverting attention to celebrity news like the real news media. Personally, I'd find it fascinating. But I doubt it's true. They'll probably just do their best on their own and whatever few writers they have not participating in the strike.

Either way, yay! My fake news (which is, disappointingly, usually more informative and interesting than the real news - without even trying) is back!

Pfft, Chaser beats any American news comedy hands down.

*looks up some clips thanks to the magic of YouTube*

Hm... I'd place them about equally. They really seem to do exactly the same thing. The Daily Show makes fun of America's inadequacies and absurdities ... and so does The Chaser it seems (a clip of them convincing an American on the street that Mount Rushmore is in Australia had me laughing out loud). The Australian version of YouTube has a wider gambit of Chaser clips than the American version, but the clips making fun of America are still the most popular Razz

I suppose The Chaser gets a few bonus points, since the Australian accents already place me out of my element - which makes everything all the more absurd than it already is.

Chasers' gets 9,001 points however, for this  (4:35 and 7:07 are GOLD) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=usbNJMUZSwo&NR=1
I don't recall The Daily Show ever attacking The Secret - and it's so very deserving of attacking.

Heh, what pushes them way past any other for me, is that a few of them went to my school, and founded a satirical newspaper here that I'm now working on. Very Happy

Watch the clips Rive sent and more. The problem is a lot of their humour is only funny if you know the people, like for example I loved their Eulogy song (Some people might not, as it makes fun of dead people) but it's all about Australian people.

Hehe, I know, though it was pointed out to me he probably intervied dozens upon dozens of people to get four or five who fell for each one.

But still yeah, I'm sure it helps to know why my opinion is as it is. Razz

The main advantage The Daily Show has over international spoof shows I'd say is that they're actually able to interview a lot of the people they poke fun at - I doubt if Chasers could get Bill O'Reilly to come on the air, but both The Daily Show and Colbert have.

To offset the Chaserness (funny as it may be), here's a good clip from The Daily Show. It gets bonus points for having a 2 second clip from both Star Wars and Indiana Jones Smile

Sure, but it doesn't make it any less amusing. In fact, even if they interviewed 200 people to get those 5 responses - that's still 7.5 million people who would fall for it if you expanded it to the entire US population. Tourism problem solved Razz

"We would like to return to work with our writers. If we cannot, we would like to express our ambivalence, but without our writers we are unable to express something as nuanced as ambivalence." -- Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert

Yeah, the Chaser can't have guests, because every celebrity and politician in Australia is scared as hell of them because of what they do.

The same thing has happened to them. Colbert's been conducting his "Better Know a District" segment for the past couple of years ("...and now for part 28 of our 435 part series") which had the goal of interviewing the representative from every congressional district. After twenty or so of them, the Democratic chairmen advised his fellow Democrats to not appear on his show (which seems sillly, because Colbert was letting off Democrats a lot easier than Republicans at the time). Since then, he's had a bit tougher of a time getting congressmen to appear.

The Daily show is funny, but I love the Colbert Report! One of my favorite of his segments in The Word.

One of my favorite moments on his show was when he had John Mellancamp(sp?) on the show and pretended to start a fake fight with Mellancamp by flipping the table and saying "You wanna' go, motherf***er?

That was great, but what was even funnier was the look on Mellencamp's face.
