Ah, I suppose if you said "The Earth is as it is, but instead of a solid iron core it's hollow for about a mile in the very center."
Then yeah, I suppose you could end up floating around in there for quite awhile. If there was air in there you would still eventually stop. It'd need to be a vacuum to fall back and forth endlessly.
But I think we're pretty sure the inner core is solid (we're less sure it's made of iron and nickel), so wacky scientist was just doing a thought experiment  _________________
