World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King

We've had threads on this before, but they've been lost to the sands of time.

I haven't even watched it myself yet - but one of Wrath of the Lich King's in-game cinematics has been leaked. And supposedly it's really really awesome.

I don't really want to watch it - I'd rather see it in-game when it's properly supposed to show up. But there's no way I can keep people from spoiling it for me within the next two months. So I'm going to spoil myself instead  Razz
Xander Vos

Wow looks pretty cool.

I'm pretty heavily into DotA at the moment - I just like it as something to pass the time when I have nothing else to do. I'm crap enough at it that I can just play some hard computers and it's enough of a challenge - but that's about the limit of my interactment with the Warcraft world. Razz
Lord Invictus

I want the game. But how do you get ingame cinematics to come up??? I'm lvl 44 and I haven't seen ONE yet....

Check out Demigod, looks like DotA on crack.

A WoW expansion? Yawn

I'll be a bit nicer than Embeion - although that's not hard Razz

Wrath of the Lich King appears much more storyline focused than the original game and even Burning Crusade was. In game cinematics are a new feature to help promote that fact. So you won't find any from levels 1 to 70.

Also, there's apparently going to be new "phased" quests. These will allow a zone to change for your character after you complete a quest. In other words, if you finish a quest to "reclaim that tower for us from them!" and you finish it - unlike the old world - you'll see the people you helped keep that tower instead of "them" just respawning there so the next person can finish the quest. You basically get your own personal vision of the world. At least, that's how I've heard it described.

I hope they apply the same technology to the old world and let me finally reclaim Gnomeregan for Gnomish kind!  Laughing
Dakoth

Right now the whole continuity thing is pretty weak.  Theres a seasonal event going on right now that you have to summon a boss in an instance to kill for phat purplez.  So I have a screenshot of this boss and about 9 of his clones just lying there dead.  Kind of takes one out of it, I'd be quite impressed with a more immersive world.
Darth Thilus

Yes, you're right Rive. That's how phased quests work.

For those who like suprises even the least, you should NOT WATCH THE CINEMATIC. I regret doing so yesterday. It'll spoil immense amounts of fun and gasps. And, if you WERE to watch it, then for God's sake, don't read on more about it like I did! If you've read on about it already, then congratulations; you've just plown through half of the suprises in Northrend.

Shame on you.  Mad
Lord Invictus

I have another few things I originally forgot to post.

Does anyone think this looks like LOTR Black Gate scene?

Why the crud do the Forsaken drop bombs on everyone???
Darth Thilus

Don't read this unless you do not want to be suprised.

Spoiler:

The apothecaries are controlled by Varimathras who've siezed control over the Undercity.

Lord Invictus

.... I play Alliance (I know, I know....) sooo.... I probably wouldn't know anyway....

But what do you mean apothecary? Is that the Undercity's freaky experimental stuff???

My best friend.
Rive Caedo

Even if you hate WoW, it should be interesting to think about the underlying technology. Essentially they're allowing every single player to seemlessly travel into their own version of a small pocket of the world after they've done something significant there.

That's seriously impressive stuff at the scale and number of players WoW has. I don't think anyone's pulled it off before. It clears up one of the famous criticisms of MMORPGs.

"After you save the princess from the tower, you can turn around and see her right back at the top of the tower screaming for help."

Now, after you save her - she'll stay saved from your viewpoint.
Lord Invictus

Well maybe some people like to see the princess die....

If that's new to you, you clearly never played RuneScape.

I don't play RuneScape anymore really, and I know its graphics are hardly as good, but it already has that. In quests on RuneScape, say there is one character at the beginning, and everyone can see him or her, but you finish the quest and at the end, that character dies, you won't see the person, but everyone else who hasn't finished the quest will still see the character. Things such as that, with certain aspects of the RuneScape game being different to each person depending on how far along in the story you are will be different to each person. Though RuneScape has always had the best quest stories in my opinion.

Most MMOs I played, the quests were almost always "Kill 5 of this, 6 of those, 10 of these...and 4 of those harder guys. Do this a few times and then you'll get a quest to kill the boss! Though, you've probably already killed him a few times...Well, we'll give you a crappy XP reward and a few coins (even though you made double that just sitting around) for your efforts. Smile"

Hm, that's something I like about Guild Wars too. It focuses mainly on the story. I guess WoW is getting there. Wink I don't hate WoW, I just don't prefer it.
Rive Caedo

I did play Runescape. I *think* I recall that being true, but the problem was you still saw everyone walking up to that quest guy and then talking to dead air. The way it sounds like the phasing system works you can literally save a town and so every time you return there you'll enter a friendly town, but the people who haven't saved it will enter a separate instance of the town still overrun by bad guys. But since you're considered in a separate area, you won't see anyone fighting or talking to dead air.

I can't speak for the member-only quests, since they were after my time, but the freebie quests were very similar to WoW quests, except instead of self-contained storylines they had... no story. Except for the Dragon Slayer quest and the Prince Ali quest.
Dork of Mordork

The member quests (I had completed every one before I stopped playing) had very expansive story lines, a few different main plots (such as Ardounge and the Elves, Lumbridge and Goblins, etc) but they were definitely more expansive and thought out than the free quests. It was my favorite part of the game, lots of fun quests. Razz
Dakoth

I have nothing but hate for runescape.  I'll be kind and stop there.

The one concern I have about this feature is over how you can help people complete quests, It'll be curious to see how this is pulled off.
Rive Caedo

Dakoth wrote:

I'm called Solo in WoW, hehe. My main's name was Hanaar, which was shorted down to Han... and you can guess how much that might've evolved.

Thus giving the MMO an 'ending' (For lack of a better word).  EWndgame stuff all becomes PvP then?

And soloing isn't one of WoW greatest strengths, I got to 36 before I hit a wall.
Rive Caedo

I'm sure that the end game instances won't have phasing technology - so you'll still be able to go in and beat up bosses any time you want. This only applies to the external world used for leveling and quests.

I've never had any trouble with soloing in WoW. Well, my warrior had a bit of trouble - he hit a bit of a wall about the same time your character did and I stopped leveling him out of annoyance. My Paladin and Mage both cruised to 70 with only minor difficulties at level 45ish (lack of quests).
Dakoth

I'm actually a really bad leveler, I find theres way more to do at 70 than growing up.
Ga'nen

I am currently leveling up and I don't find it too difficult. I mostly solo because I can't really group well with others, but I have a friend who I level up with occasionally. I currently have a lvl 39 Tauren Shaman.

Your a bad liar, although I agree with you on the 70 bit. But a lv60 Rogue ina week is OP (Without the x3 XP hax).. I generally get to 15-20 and give up

Took me like nearly 2years of playing and quitting to get my Paladin to 70.. and although I'm looking forward to starting from 55 with a DK Outlands is gonna blow..
Rive Caedo

I like leveling Outlands a lot more than levels 25-58. So I'm glad that the Death Knight starting quests will carry you to 58 supposedly, so you don't even really need to touch the Old World before you move on to Outlands.

Paladins are almost doubtlessly the hardest class to level - although the improved Retribution damage in WOTLK will probably change that.

I was considering switching to my Paladin alt for my main once WOTLK hit, but some recent Beta patches have made my Mage look rather appealing again. So now I'm not sure.
Lord Embeion

a Divine Storm AW Bubble should change your mind
Darth Thilus

I have a level 70 paladin just waiting for the new patch so I can go retribution. Hrrm, and for the record it took me 8 months to level him to 70. >.<
Ga'nen

I made a Belf paladin who I am probably going to level was ret, my friend has a prot pally but she says she hates leveling her because it's hard. I hear just Prot pallies are hard to level while ret is fun, but prot is fun for tanking.
Darth Thilus

I love prot.

Pros: They can take on almost a limitless number of monsters and still walk out alive. In other words they can speedgrind if they take multiple mobs at one time.

But...

Cons: They do vey little damage. They can kill almost any mob, but it takes long. And they have a hard time getting gear to tank higher level content. I grinded gear for protection for about a month or two, and then I decided to go holy and bought some gear from AH. All green, they asked me in G-Chat what my stats were for they needed a healer for a Kara-run. I told them, and they were all "That'll do. C'mon, we'll invite you." I could go Kara as Holy with 68-70 green gear, while I barely got in as off-tank with my hard-earned prot-gear.  Confused
Dakoth

Geez, lotta paladins here, I guess that makes me like your leader or something

And Paladins aren't cheap. We're just born invincible.

Except those who can't play.
Rive Caedo

The annoyance of constantly having to spam your seal buttons was one of the things that stopped me from playing my Paladin alt very often. Since WotLK is changing the seal/judgement mechanic to avoid that, I think he'll be getting a fairly good amount of more use. But some fun looking things (mirror image!) will probably keep my mage main being the first I level to 80.

... That was the other thing that stopped me from playing my Paladin... I'd mess myself up by trying to find my blink button Wink
Ga'nen

Paladin's are cool in that they can fit the primary roles that are necessary in WoW. You have holy who can help heal which is nice though I don't think they can fill the role of a healer as well as others. They can tank because of their ability to wear plate and they can dps with the right gear if they are ret. I think Paladins are fine, the one class I hate the most is rogues! My shaman can get cut up by a good rogue, especially if they are holding me down for half the fight with their stupid sap and whatever else they have.

I have a young ret pally that I will level up on days I am bored of playing with my Shaman. My mage I am pretty much going to ignore because I cannot stand leveling up with him. Sad

Warcraft has just passed 11 million players.

Meaning, if you magically gathered every Warcraft player and established them into their own country - you'd have a population of about the same size as Cuba.

Also meaning that about 1 in every 500 people on Earth is a Warcraft player.
Dakoth

Also meaning that ony killed me when she had 800 hp left and 1 second left on my lay on hands.  I plan to never log on to WoW again.

The reason why Warcraft sucks. The game on the right is so much fun. I own and love it.
Sephiroth

That's pretty funny. The only LOTR game that I liked was LOTR: The Two Towers on PS2
Lord Invictus

If you like RTS games, I suggest you buy BFME II and Rise of the Witch King expansion. Awesome. Only problem is Witch King expansion has hero-killing hero-battalions for each faction that are overpowered as miniature gods. They can take down an army in seconds, and some can kill an army OF HERO UNITS in seconds.
Scion

Warcraft is superior in every way to LOTR, I hope you weren't implying The Frozen throne was worse than BFME
Rive Caedo

The major strength of Warcraft (well, Blizzard games in general) is its humor, in my opinion. That's what delineates it from the things it draws inspiration from (Lord of the Rings, Dungeons and Dragons, etc.)

Many, I have no love for LOTR
Rive Caedo

I certainly enjoyed Lord of the Rings (the movies and the books). But I've had no real desire to dive into the other materials surrounding it (The Simarillian, the Histories of Middle Earth assembled by Tolkien's son from his father's unpublished writings). So obviously I didn't enjoy it as much as Star Wars or Star Trek or Warcraft, which I have read stuff outside of the "main" materials (especially Star Wars, obviously).

Although maybe that's for the best. Sheldon recently did a series of strips on the Middle Earth books published after Tolkien's death...

Rive Caedo

Death Knight starting quests: Very cool.
Northrend (from what little I've seen): Also very cool - everything that was nice about Burning Crusade with a bit more style and weird stuff (vehicles are neat).

I wish I had started in Howling Fjord instead of Boolean Tundra though. It's a much more impressive zone - in my opinion.

I shudder to think of how long it will take me to hit 80.
Ga'nen

People are already hitting eighty in vast amounts, it's really scary. On my server someone by the name of Cookiee was the first level eighty. It took them two days!

Borean Thundra is a good starting zone because now I am doing Howling Fjord for the experience and I am sweet sailing through it with no trouble. My Resto shaman is level 72 and I haven't run into any trouble (other than ganking) with dying from any of the mobs even if I have up to four or five on me. Dalaran is amazing though and even the land below it is really pretty. Wotlk is definitely a nice xpansion and I am glad that I made it to seventy by the time it came out. The Nexus so far is probably my favorite of the two starting instances.
Lord Invictus

Yeah, what is Dalaran like? I"ve heard (from Blizz) it's better than Shat. Does it still have portals to everywhere and whatnot? What's in it?
Rive Caedo

Portals to Shattrath plus the cities Shattrath itself can port to and every battleground - plus Lake Wintergrasp.

I haven't explored Dalaran much beyond that.

But it floats. It's a floating city! That makes it at least twice as good as Shattrath Razz
Lord Embeion

My server was world first to clear Heroic: Naxx and also mighta been first for Malygos..not sure though. Our first 80 was third day, mobtagging is OP.
I'm about 72 right noa, I should be 75 but I rerolled servers and was lv66 when Wrath went live.

But ya the zones are amazing, utterly amazing. It's defiantly alot funner then Azeroth and Outlands. I like how the gear looks also, gives me a more pre-bc feeling. Outlands was all pretty and shiney, noa its all dungeony again. BLARG RAMBLE

The damage on weapons is crazy. In Borean Tundra there's a chain quest were you basically get a free t5 weapon for the Horde.

I have mixed feelings about the gear. I LIKE that it all matches each other. But I'm also a bit disappointed that - save for color variations - there's only one armor model for each type (cloth, leather, mail, plate) for the entire level range. That seems a bit lazy. Still, I'd say it's positive overall.

And yes, the lore is nice. A friend at level 74 was telling me you visit Frostmourne's cavern for a quest. Neat.

Also, here's an awesome thing I found!

I have a level 71 Mage and a level 70 Paladin. I decided to put them both aside in favor of leveling a Death Knight (shortly after hit 71 on the Mage and realized I was burning through content and not really enjoying it since all the gear was useless to me).

But I still want my Paladin and Mage to level... I just don't have time to do it. So what to do?

There's a daily quest just north of Westguard Keep in Howling Fjord at Steel Gate. It's for flying around in a little plane and shooting down 8 gargoyles. It's rather fun and it takes less than 2 minutes usually. If you're rested the gargoyles will net you 800 or so xp a piece and the quest itself will reward you 20000 xp.

It'll take a long time in real time to get a level in this fashion (about 50 days), but you'll have done it with absolute minimum playtime because the quest takes so little time and doesn't require any travel at all. It's nice to do if you have alts that wouldn't be earning exp otherwise (like me).
Lord Embeion

Strands of Ancients seems like Wintergrasp just in a BG instance. Rather disappointed in Blizzard with that
Rive Caedo

I think the idea is that Wintergrasp is a large scale "main event" that only happens once every few hours.

Strand of the ancients is where you can practice for it and run it as many times as you want (and on fair terms).
Lord Embeion

That's lame

and it's still sad that there the same thing.. I would like this choice and another. Blizzard made a great game but get really lazy at times.. I'm on a PvP server and would like the world PvP event to be unique and not something that I already did 10,000x farming Honor
Ga'nen

Y3Z MOAR!

Well it's a plus that Ret Paladins DPS will be respectable this Xpack. Unfortunately everyone and there mother specced Ret when 3.0.1 came out
Rive Caedo

Unholy Death Knights (what I'm currently playing) synergize really well with Paladin tanks. Late in our tree we get a disease that increases magic damage by +13%. And we can use Pestilence to spread that disease to every mob in the immediate vicinity. Makes for a nice consecrate boost.

Ga'nen

I swear that every ally on my server respecced into Ret as soon as they became OP. Battlegrounds at level 51-60 were awful, especially for Alterac Valley. It was just mass slaughter by the ally on the horde.

Also it seems like most of the Ally on my server are wasting their time ganking in large groups near instance portals. It's really sad but kind of fun when you actually manage to get a warrior who tried ganking you at half health to basically close to death until his healer friend comes and saves him. Smile

I've been Ret since Pre-BC and it feels good to be OP. But ya every noob and there mother specced Ret. Didn't matter for me.. just made me look better when I owned them all.
Ga'nen

Well, the fun thing about ret paladins is that I've seen really good rets tank things quite easily. Back when I was still leveing pre-wotlk and I ran Stratholme I asked a friend who had specced ret to tank and he did it with no problem. He had lower mitigation but his damage output was enough to help kill mobs faster and the healer was good enough to keep him up at all times. I think we wiped only twice, once was because someone's pet was still on aggressive and pulled a bunch of mobs and the other time was because of Baron Rivendale just owning us when we weren't prepared.
Lord Invictus

The Alliance winning a BG....? SACRELIGE! I'm Alliance, and even for lvl 80's in my guild winning BG's is a heresy.
Ga'nen

Nah, the alliance tend to win Alterac Valley quite easily in the 51-60 tier. Like, it'll be 20 horde vs 40 ally.

They pretty much hand out high scores to popular games and average scores to everything else.
