A few of my buddies and I are going to see it this weekend. I'm pretty excited. I've heard mixed reviews from my buds though. Some hated it, while some loved it. Thoughts on this movie?
Sirak Sazen
They won't let me in because of the R rating. I'm trying to convince my dad to get me in, but he despises cinema. I checked the IMBD parents guide for it. Rated R for graphic violence, nudity, some sexuality, and I do believe there is an attempted rape scene. No dice.
Rive Caedo
The general consensus I'm hearing is: "You'll probably love it if you've read the comic book - but it may be confusing if you haven't."
I haven't read the comic book (amazingly). And I'm planning to see it and then read the original comic book (so the movie can't be tainted for me by a supposedly superior version).
Usually when I read reviews that say "could be confusing," I walk out wondering "how could anyone find that confusing?" So I'm not very worried.

They don't even cut that much out from the comic book.
The line at the end when Adrian says he isn't a comic book villian is pure gold.
shadowball2021
I read the novel first a while back then saw the film on opening day; I still prefer the novel but the film is very well made and is visually stunning.
princessleia
Watchmen sounds like a really good movie I think....I have seen previews of the movie and it makes me want to go see it.
Crozeus
Damn age ratings.
Sirak Sazen
Isn't the age limit 18 in Britain?
Xander Vos
It's MA 15+ here I'm assuming, so I may go see it, I dunno.
Adenn
I wanted to see this film, but I just don't have enough time for it.
Xander Vos
Might see it for my birthday, but I'm unsure whether the three girls who'd be going would like it...
It's that or 17 Again, which, whilst I wanna see it (Matthew Perry duh! ) I'm not sure the other three GUYS would wanna see it...
Lord Embeion
Blarg everyone I know says its bad.. but most likely due to there lack of knowledge in the good ole' graphic novel world. I agree with Rive if you read the comicthingy then you should enjoy it very much... if not you'll have to pay very close attention.
I will probably wait until this comes out on a few websites I know (winkwink) to check its "reviews".
Talen D'aar
I'm taking my friends to go see it on Saturday. We're usually the people that likes the movies that everyone else hates, so I think we'll be alright.
Xander Vos
That's a bit of an odd reputation.
Talen D'aar
Well, it's not our only reputation. XD But if you knew us, you'd come to find we're odd, but good, people.
Xander Vos
Sounds like my kind of people.
Talen D'aar
Yep! If the house ain't rockin', come 'a knockin'!
Talen D'aar
Going to see it in a couple of hours. Since I haven't read the graphic novel at all, I'll let you guys know what I think later.
RainaRose
I'm thinking of going to see it myself. It'll be good for me to get out of the house.
Lord Lanik
Meh...it was ok
The fully naked blue dude was not something I wanted to see
Hated the soundtrack too
It was kinda confusing at the beggining
Sides for those it was good

Interesting little tidbit: He made this post exactly 11 hours and 50 minutes after his previous post.
Talen D'aar
I'm pro like that.
Back on topic:
I thought Watchmen was frakking amazing! I loved every minute of the movie. I didn't mind the blue penis...it actually gave me and my friends a nice laugh.
Anyways, although I didn't read the graphic novel and I probably didn't catch some of the tidbits for the hardcore fans, I thought the plot for the movie itself was very good at keeping you informed when you needed to be.
Like I told my friends who told me it sucked balls: instead of going into the movie trying to find everything out in the story on your own as you're watching, just let the movie tell you. Sit back, relax, and just hang on. Trust me, it's much more satisfying.
So yeah, 9..9.5/10 from me.
RainaRose
I'm going to go see it some time this week. I hear its really good and I need to get out of the house. I herd it wasn't that much of a "super hero" story.
Talen D'aar
Yeah, they're more human than the average superhero. So, just humans with superpowers. At least, some are. Other characters, (Rorschach and Nite Owl), have gadgets and training and stuff.
princessleia
Nothing wrong with being odd haaahaa as long as you aren't crazy heehee...
Jaden Nightsaber
Watchmen the movie was a good adaptation of the graphic novel. There are a few problems with the movie though. One Adrian Veidt was horribly miscast. His body build is too small, and his eastern accent didn't seem to fit. Secondly the soundtrack was awkward. Only when they inserted random pop songs into scenes. While The Smashing Pumpkins' song The Beginning is the End is the Beginning worked extremely well in the trailer it was missing from the movie. Instead there is 99 Red Balloons and Sounds of Silence. Neither songs I hate but the way they put them in the movie was strange. And the sex scene seemed a bit drawn out. I understand they had to change the ending but they could have shown more destruction.
Do yourself a favor and read the graphic novel. You'll want to do it more than once.
Sirak Sazen
Anybody catch the My Chemical Romance song in the credits?
Adenn
I was hoping they would put in the 99 Red Balloons version covered by Gold Finger.
Xander Vos
Sirak Sazen wrote:

Is that taken from the movie, or is it actually a video clip?
Sirak Sazen
It's one of their videos recorded for Watchmen.
Xander Vos
So is that footage actually used in the movie?
Sirak Sazen
Not to my knowledge.
Lord Vexen
I caught that.
I think the song "Oh the times they're a changin" fit well, although the song during the sex scene about David making a song for God was horrible.
Except for that, I liked the soundtrack...I don't see whats wrong with it.
Talen D'aar
Same here.
Rive Caedo
Finally caught this tonight.
Rive Caedo wrote:

I was right. I don't see how anyone could find it confusing.
The only thing I didn't "get" was why Manhattan made the big golden glass structure on Mars. I have a few theories, but nothing conclusive. It was pretty though
Anyway, I did hate hate hate the soundtrack. It felt more like someone trying to do clever (read: not very) "mashups" on YouTube with scenes from the movie instead of... how the actual movie should be.
Luckily - it's a 3 hour movie and there's probably only 6 or 7 scenes with annoying over-the-top music. So it didn't ruin the movie.
Overall I'd say 8/10. I did really enjoy it - but I'm not sure why people I know have an almost cultlike reverence for it. Then again, I'd probably say the same thing if I saw Star Wars for the first time ever today.
I haven't gotten my hands on the graphic novel yet, but I did read a quick summary of it just because I was interested in why I've heard more than a few people whine about the ending being changed.
Well, I'll rejudge after reading the novel - but it seems to me to be a rather minor change. And, furthermore, that the film version actually seems superior.
Sidenote: "All Along the Watchtower" did make me perk up - almost entirely because of its recent Battlestar Galactica ties.
Xander Vos
A lot of people I know have been critical of it, but I'm still keen on seeing it.
Talen D'aar
Yeah, with any movie, but epsecially the ones that are getting so many reviews from both sides of the spectrum, I always think you should see for yourself whether you like it or not.
Sirak Sazen
Would anybody consider it too inappropriate for a 14-year-old?

Well, there are some parts that might be a bit much for some younger people; there is a near-rape scene, a sex scene and lets not forget Dr Manhattan's blue wang...
Rive Caedo
Gah, I hear other people say this type of thing all the time - but I think this is the first time I'll be saying it:
Spoiler:
A guy's arm gets snapped in half. People on fire. A guy gets his head violently attacked by an axe. A pregnant woman is shot after slicing a guy's cheek open. Multiple people explode into goo. Torture via glass shards is used to obtain information - along with finger breaking. And there are some arms that get completely - and rather graphically - sawed off!
And that's just the ones I remember off the top of my head.
And you're more worried about 8 seconds of a nipple and 14 seconds of a tastefully done penis damaging a young person's psyche?!
Something is seriously wrong with our society

I totally forgot about bringing up those parts; guess I watch so much violent stuff, those didn't come to mind. I just thought of the parts that stuck out in me viewing of it. The rape scene was always something that got to me in the novel and was even that more intense in the film and Dr. Manhattan being nude was a bit odd to me when reading but I guess when your as powerful as him, you can do whatever the hell you want...
Crozeus
Take a Bow by Muse (amazing song) was used in the trailer over here, was it the same for you guys?

I'm pretty sure it's also meant to represent his ever-increasing distance from human civilization

And what? His porn star penis is the ruler?

Hehe. But seriously. It's more apparent in the graphic novel (which I got a chance to read through this afternoon) what's happening.
Right after his conversion, the government has him wear a full spandex superhero outfit (and they want him to wear a helmet too - but he declines). After awhile, he cuts it down to a less fully covering outfit. Then, by Vietnam - he's only wearing that "M" thong thing (which you can see in the movie). By the "present" he's not wearing anything at all because he doesn't see the point and he's forgetting human conventions (an even more obvious example being when he forgets that humans need air).
Anyway: Speaking of the graphic novel. I'm glad I saw the movie before reading it. The novel DOES provide some additional backstory, but nothing of extreme value is lost (cutting the Black Freighter segments is understandable). Although I do sort of wish they'd left in the newspaper guy giving the kid his cap - thinking the world is about to end.
As I was told - the movie and graphic novel endings are extremely similar. But I do vastly prefer the movie ending.
Darth Splinter
Am I the only one who has no desire to see this movie or read the comic books?
From what I have heard, we see a lot of a large blue man's dongle.

If by "a lot" you mean maybe 30 seconds max - throughout the entire (3 hour) movie. And it's never a focus.
But anyway, I can totally understand not wanting to see it. Darkness isn't for everyone.
Talen D'aar
Yeah, but the blueman penis is definitely not a focus. It's just that the character shows up on screen and you think, whoa, cool effects. Then you realize that he's not wearing clothes and your eyes drift down to his waist and...OH GAW!!
Xander Vos
When I realise a man isn't wearing clothes my eyes do not drift down to his waist...

Is it really any different from say... Michelangelo's David?
Actually, I'd say it was a good deal tamer than even that.
Some people need to grow up and get over their homophobia
Xander Vos
There's a difference from homophobia and not wanting to see male genitals.
Rive Caedo
There's also a difference between no reaction and/or "meh" and "OH GAW!!"
Talen D'aar
I didn't mean that reaction to be interpreted as homophobic, just that it was surprising, like...HOLY CRAP! Where'd that come from?!

Omg no way! Now I have to see it!
Don't, its a terrible cover of a Bob Seger song.
I've read the novel, and it's at elast 100X better. That being said, the movie was probably as good as it was going to be. There were just a few flaws here and there that ruined it for me.
Rive Caedo
Well, Watchmen has outdone V for Vendetta (the previous highest grossing film based on an Alan Moore story). But Watchmen's budget was three times higher.
So it looks like it'll just barely break even or be slightly in the green for its budget + advertising after DVD sales. I suppose it doesn't matter anyway. It's not like there's a chance of a Watchmen 2.
Anyway, did anyone link this? It looks like whoever made it put it online the same day Watchmen came out - but I didn't see it until now. It's a parody of the old time superhero cartoons. And it's almost perfectly done. Made me laugh.
Did you catch the Wilhelm Scream?

Scion wrote:

1. It was a Bob Dylan song.
2. I didn't think it was that bad.
