Useless Facts

Okay, rate the useless fact above you on how interesting it is on a one to five scale, then post your own useless fact;

Fact numbuh 1#:

What color was the sky in Ancient Greece?

Gold. The Ancient Greeks had no word for blue, so the closest translation from Greek to English is "Gold."

μπλε or κυανός? Confused
Lord Invictus

Are you using literal translations on websites, or dictionary? Anyway, I mean ancient Greek. The language has changed since then.

4. I found that interesting.

The word SET has the most definitions of any word in the English language. SET has 464 definitions in the Oxford English Dictionary.

0. Everyone here knows that...

Same goes for New Zealand but with sheep by the way.

I can't remmber the details so forgive this stange fact that probably won't make much sense.

(I think) The 42nd passage in the bible begins with the word Shake, and the 42nd last passage ends with the word Spear, and this was theorised as a gift to Shakespeare by King James as Shakespeare was 42 at the time of publication.

I could be wrong about the passage details, but its true.

I haven't checked the 42nd last passage, but the 42nd first passage doesn't start with shake.

King James wouldn't do that to the Bible.  Rolling Eyes  It's about God's Word, not about Shakespear's birthday.  Rolling Eyes

Sorry, but I find that a bunch of bullcrap.

First of all, because no one actually knows the date that Shakespear was born, and second because King James wouldn't have done such a minor thing as adding a "birthday present" for Shakespear into something as important as the Bible.

It's just stuff to try to get some "dirt" on Christianity.
Xander Vos

Yes, I'm sure King James wasn't able to just ask Shakespeare, of course.

How is that dirt?? That's just an interesting point of note, nothing negative or positive.
Xander Vos

Ta dah, that "bull crap" was entirely true. The King James version was written in 1610, when Shakespeare turned 46. Psalm 46 is below: (Boldened is the 46th word and the 46th last word.)

Quote:
1  God is our refuge and strength,
        a very present help in trouble.

2  Therefore will not we fear,
        though the earth be removed,
and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;

3  though the waters thereof roar and be troubled,
        though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof.
Selah.

4  There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God,
        the holy place of the tabernacles of the Most High.

5  God is in the midst of her;
        she shall not be moved:
God shall help her, and that right early.

6  The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved:
        he uttered his voice, the earth melted.

7  The LORD of hosts is with us;
        the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Selah.

8  Come, behold the works of the LORD,
        what desolations he hath made in the earth.

9  He maketh wars to cease unto the end of the earth;
        he breaketh the bow, and cutteth the spear in sunder;
he burneth the chariot in the fire.

10  Be still, and know that I am God:
        I will be exalted among the heathen,
I will be exalted in the earth.

11  The LORD of hosts is with us;
        the God of Jacob is our refuge.
Rive Caedo

I would think that it's more coincidental than an actual "gift". The spear portion is a literal translation from Hebrew - there's no way to translate it other than being a spear. The "shake" is a less literal translation, "shake", "tremble", and "quake" have all been used over the years.

It's neat, but it's likely just a legend that grew around an uncanny coincidence that someone noticed. The same as the many "Bible Code"s out there.
Xander Vos

Well, still. Wink

I have to agree. I don't think King James even knew Shakespeare, so what would that have to do with anything? Like Rive Caedo said, it may just be coincidental.

Apparetnly some lyrics are offensive to some people.
