Prolouge

Rain poured mercilessly on the neighborhood of Green Tree, the dilapidated houses groaning against the pounding. The name Green Tree was unfitting, as most of the trees had almost to no leafs at all, their gnarled branches reaching out at anybody who dared to drive through the roads. The weeds were overgrown, and the sun never seemed to shine through the dense, dark clouds that flooded the sky. Few people left their houses, and if they did, it was to check the mail or go someplace else. Nobody ever stayed outside for more than two hours. Nobody. There was, however, one particular building, down Moan Street, and right across from the Forest of Nothing, as the children of the neighborhood would call it. The house used to be rich and full of energy in 1976, parties would be hosted there nearly every night, and the residents were very proud people who lived very happy lives. That is, until the husband decided to buy a valued artifact from a local museum that was said to hold a curse from South America, and whoever had possession of the artifact would be damned to agony for life.

Of course, the ignorant husband shrugged this off and showed it to almost everyone he knew, bragging about its high price. People had noticed he began to change. He had gone out a lot less, shunned his wife and children, and even denied mailed letters. Soon, he had passed away from what doctors presume is suicide, although it is unconfirmed. Rumors spread like wildfire, from emotional greed, to the curse that gave the critical blow. The family was quickly forgotten, including the artifact, which went missing. Investigators looked everywhere for it, but there was not one trace of it. A reward was placed upon the item of 1,000,000 dollars for whoever could return it safely. Many have tried, and all have failed.

The house was abandoned, left to rot in a lonely corner. However, just as it was about to be torn down, John Berry came along…
