The principle of hyperspace was first discovered by the Rakata about 50,000 years before the Battle of Yavin. The ancient Rakata used force-enabled drives to create a galaxy-wide empire. The earlier hyperspace-utilizing artifacts such as matter transmitters and strange arches found on ruined worlds cannot be copied by modern hyperdrive technology. It was the Corellians and the Duros who were first able to make technological versions of the force-enhanced drives of the Rakatan ancients, which allowed them to make the first true hyperdrive. Despite the common usage of hyperspace there is very little known about the true nature of hyperspace. The most popular theory is that hyperspace uses another dimension to sidestep the light speed limit. Some others theorize that it phases matter right into another universe, which something like otherspace or subspace, and thus they can gain superlight speeds. Whatever the case might be, there are many complex scientific principles known to the modern hyperdrive engineers which allowed for a myriad of different uses for this faster-than-light phenomenon called hyperspace.
