While I'm often the first to say "stop worrying", this actually does bear a bit of discussion.
Specifically because the specific strain of this flu is especially dangerous to young adults (read: most members of this message board). Due to it causing a "Cytokine storm" - which, in layman's terms, means that the stronger your immune system is, the worse it will hit you.
Whereas the "normal" seasonal flu has a 1% mortality rate and hits the elderly the hardest, this is closer to 5-10% and hits people in their prime.
In 1918 a similar strain killed millions of people. Luckily, we have better tools to fight it now - however we also have much greater travel capabilities. Which is why this is spreading so quickly.
So I'm not going to say "stop worrying" - but I will say "don't worry too much yet". Wash your hands more often. Don't go to Mexico (where it's hitting the hardest - for now - they just shut down all of their school and public functions). And if you get these symptoms...
Don't got to work/school.
It might also be worth staying away from hospitals if you don't have those symptoms or something worse. That's your call.
Darth Splinter
I'm not scared. I have had the flu before and I can last another one. Out of all reported cases so far, only one person has been hospitalized.
A physician on CNN or something said that most people are coping with it easily with lots of rest and staying home.

I'm not an expert. It does make it possible that he wouldn't be hit as hard by the cytokine storm effect though.

Absolutely. This isn't Zombie-scale bio-outbreak. But this IS more dangerous than the normal seasonal flu.
There's no reason to not wash your hands a bit more than usual. This thing is still nasty and avoiding it is the best thing to do.
Don't be scared. Just be cautious.
With any luck, we'll get this contained - but that's going to be difficult with global travel. Mexico is getting hit the hardest (20 confirmed deaths, 26 confirmed cases, and thousands of suspected cases). They just shut down their schools and public functions today to try to stop the spread.

I have to say, I loved the advice that the American government were giving any visitors to Mexico.
"Please stay at least 5 feet away from everyone at all times"
Still, it's pretty terrible though, 85 deaths is a lot considering it was only discovered last friday. I wouldn't be worried though, but it's still tragic for the people of Mexico (Considering there is talk of quarantining the entire country).

Interesting note from Wikipedia (sourced to a "Cecil Textbook of Medicine, 21st Edition"), "Preliminary data from clinical trials involving patients with sepsis-induced ARDS have shown a reduction in organ damage and a trend toward improvement in survival (survival in ARDS is approximately 60%) after administering or upregulating a variety of free radical scavengers (antioxidants)."
ARDS being another disease causing cytokine storms in people with strong immune systems.
So, if you do get sick, taking some sort of Vitamin C supplement along with eating lots of fruits and vegetables is probably good advice. That's true with most diseases but especially here.

Yeah, same here. I don't even have a good diet and go outside to run in the pouring rain in low temperatures, and I rarely get sick. I've only had the flu once, and I got better fairly quickly.
As for this swine flu thing, I'm not worried....I've never had any desire to go to Mexico, anyway.

Reported cases already in NSW.. scary listening to the radio yesterday in the morning when it was first announced as a potential threat but to be alert and not alarmed, to there being diagnosed cases close to home in the arvo!

As has been said. Things are already spread far further than that. Mexico got hit first, but it's spreading quickly.
There's been 50 laboratory confirmed cases in the United States - as you might expect, most of them are in New York and California, the major travel hubs. 6 in Canada, and 2 in Spain, the UK, and New Zealand.
It looks like six US schools have been shut down for the week (again, ALL Mexican schools have been shut down). I suspect we'll see more within the next day or two.

This still won't be 1918 again (barring some sort of rapid evolution in the bacteria - which is possible, but hopefully won't occur), since we're better prepared as a species. But it's certainly looking like this won't be a fun couple of months for the human race - especially in less developed countries.
Also, I found a chart on Wikipedia showing the cytokine storm effect in 1918. Hopefully demonstrating why I'm encouraging y'all to wash yer hands and such.

Thousands die every second.
I just think this is just media hype of a disease that happens to kill a few people here and there.
Lord Invictus
I'm not scared much: hardly at all.
I've heard that it is similar to a normal flu, and that those who it kills are primarily those who have suppressed immune systems (old, young, AIDS, etc.).

Crozeus wrote:

That may be true, since we do have much better tools to fight it.
But there have only been 2 major outbreaks of Swine flu in the past 100 years.
In 1976 it infected over 200 people at a military base. That one was successfully quarantined (the panic it caused and vaccination effort caused far more harm than the actual outbreak).
In 1918 it infected over half the world and killed around 50 million people.
Thus the concern.
Lord Invictus wrote:

But, it is similar to the normal flu in terms of symptoms and treatment.
However, due to the storm effect, it's literally dozens of times more deadly to people with strong immune systems than the normal human seasonal flu.
To reiterate: Just frakking wash your hands more often until this blows over. It's not hard

Was in the paper so I'm presuming the fact she's recovering they don't think it's a big deal? Though a confirmed Aussie case is rather serious...
Maybe it's the cynic in me, but when you re-evaluate 170 deaths to 5 in Mexico, and have 150 'waiting' tests in Australia, it smacks of Governments trying to ensure there isn't a global panic, rather than an accurate reappraisal of the situation.

Far from impossible (7 in Mexico WHO is saying, actually).
But it does sound genuinely like Mexican officials declared all of the deaths "confirmed" but without proper lab work. So now all of them except the ones that have been retested in... Canada - I think - have been reduced back to "suspected".
However, if you start hearing government rumors of a "terraforming event" and gases being pumped into the atmosphere - THAT'S when you dig your underground bunker. ((<<< Obscure geeky reference))

While I'd hope you're being sarcastic, I'll offer a real answer because it brings up some interesting points.
As has been said - so far this doesn't appear much worse (if any) than previous flu strains (although as has also been said - the 1918 flu that killed millions of people appeared 4 months before it started killing large amounts of people). So it'd be irrational to take extreme measures at this stage.
But the real thing I want to bring up is how badly panicking and "the easy answer" can mess things up. The 1970's Swine Flu scare resulted in development and distribution of a vaccine to millions of people.
The Swine Flu itself only infected a single military base. Then it was quarantined and fizzled out. I think only 1 of the the soldiers died.
... The vaccine killed over 500 people.
Rather high price to pay for an epidemic that never occurred because it was completely contained (unlike this outbreak).
Also: Fun fact about Hong Kong. It's system of "One Country, Two Systems" - that guarantees it to be a capitalist area until 2047 - has... absolutely nothing documented on what happens after that system ends. It ends in 2047 and then it's completely unclear what happens to Hong Kong for now
Sirak Sazen
I'll be taking it over. My forces will be more than powerful enough by 2047.
