Splinter and Samuel's Guitar God countdownThis is similar to Yoda's Rap song countdown, but better.
Every day, or at least we will try, Samuel and I will switch off posting our favorite guitarists from #25 to #1.
#25
Keith Richards
Keith, sometimes known as "The Riffmaster", is the lead guitarist and sometimes bass player for The Rolling Stones. He derived a lot of inspiration from Chuck Berry. 64, Richards is still playing with the Stones.
Some of Keith Richards' famous work:
Gimme Shelter
Paint it Black(couldn't find a link, so search yourself)

Not BEtter than Yoda's. UTTERLY DESTROYS Yoda's CRAP Countdown.

Can we try and guess at who's number 1?
|
Darth Samuel
|
Go for it.
and number 24:
Don Wilson!
It's likely that some of you haven't heard of the group he is in, much less himself. The ventures are a group that have sold over 100 million records, despite being completely instrumental. They are EXTREMELY talented, and the guitars are no exception.
Here are a couple of links.
Live version of Wipe Out
A cover of a classical song, Flight of the Bumblebee.

Lord Embeion

Lolol this is always awesome to watch.

He's in the countdown somewhere.. top 10?
|
Darth Samuel
|
Jimi's probably like 15 or something. but that's splinter's number.
|
Crozeus
|
Matt Bellamy has gotta be in there.
|
Darth Samuel
|
He's good. But I think this is Classic Rock. Though I could be mistaken.

Anakin

I bet you Slash will be number 4.
|
Darth Samuel

yeah.... no.

Notice how we are at 24.

I'll certainly be following this list. I do, however, expect to see Zakk Wylde on it!

Thank you Splinter/Sam. With no offense to Yoda, I hate rap. Great choice with Keith Richards. Love the Stones. My prediction for #1: Jimi Hendrix FTW!

Because doing a pinch harmonic every 2.83 seconds is godlike. I'm glad no one has said Kirk Hammett. His greatness is that he rapes the wah pedal with his foot every time he solos.

Pur jamming does not make a good guitarist. Musical ability does. I'd also like to see Ray Toro on that list.
|
Darth Samuel
|
I thought we had stated this would be classical rock.
|
Sirak Sazen
|
Listen to The Black Parade. You can here the Pink Floyd style with the rythym of Queen and just a dab a David Bowie.
|
Darth Samuel
|
I've listened to it. Regardless, If it weren't classic rock, he probably wouldn't be on there. Yes, he is a good guitarist, but he is not in the top 25.

I have to agree with that.
|
Darth Samuel

when was i talking about jamming? And jamming can totally count. Ever heard of Jerry Garcia? He's amazing, and he is known for never playing a song the same way twice.
|
Sirak Sazen

Haha. I spelled pure wrong. And I believe it was here.

It seems like I'm picking on him tonight.

That was in response to Yoda saying Zakk Wylde. You posted right before I posted, so I didn't see your post.

Angus Young, FTW.

I am expecting Tom Morello somewhere...
|
Sirak Sazen
|
He was innovative, but no one of my favorites. I'm expecting Slash.
|
Scion
|
Well, Slash obviously. He is one of the most recognizable guitarists still active today.
|
Anakin
|
Yeah but Samuel is picky with it, so you never know.
|
Darth Samuel

Slash is good. And Tom Morello is just awesome. I live by one of his quotes

(Sorry everyone for the late post! My apologies!)
#23
Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton has been with a number of bands, such as Cream and Derek and the Dominos, and has worked solo to date. I can't say much more. He is one of my favorite blues rockers. When he was touring with fellow guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan(who will make an appearence later), Stevie got on a helicopter with Clapton's manager and some road crew, which crashed and killed all aboard. Clapton almost boarded said helicopter, but backed out.
His famous work:
Layla
Tears in Heaven(He wrote this to express his feelings after his four year old son, Conor, died after falling from a high rise apartment window )
Crossroads
Cocaine
Sunshine of your Love.
(I'm lazy. Get yer' own links!)
|
Sirak Sazen
|
Amazing musician, he is.
|
Darth Samuel
|
Splinter, I'd add Crossroads, Cocaine, and Sunshine of your Love.
WAIT, WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
23?!?!?!?!?! This guy spent his early musical career answering to the name GOD! Slash should be at 23 not Clapton.

Tom Morrello is unbelievably overrated.
|
Darth Samuel
|
Not really. No one else does what he does. He's actually brilliant. A Genius in the grandest sense of words. Zakk wylde is overrated.
"Hey guys, guess what? I'm going to play another minor pentatonic scale run! IF you haven't heard it, listen to anything with me soloing in it."

Is Little Richard gonna be on the list?

What exactly is good about the guy? His rhythm technique is unspectacular at best. Most of his riffs revolve around very simple power chord progressions and standard blues-rock melodies. His 'solos' are a joke. They're all gimmick, no substance. Nothing but a bunch of wacky effects sounds, with very little actual technique involved. And even his use of effects is pedestrian compared to guys like Ichirou Agata from Melt-Banana.
Despite all this, he was voted the 26th greatest guitarist of all time by Rolling Stone!? Ahead of the likes of Děck Dale, John McLaughlin and David Gilmour!? What gives!?
|
Darth Samuel
|
You honestly trust that rolling Stone thing? They had tOny Iommi, the Godfather of Heavy Metal, at like, 92nd or something. Or Angus Young might have been there.
and no one else did a rap/rock sound really before Rage. And he actually is a really good player, but you don't need 500 notes a second if the song is slow or if it doesn't need it.

He's in no way bad. The innovative sound of his playing is the only thing that makes him stand out.
|
Scion
|
Where he lacked talent, he made up for it in innovation, he deserves some credit for that.

I'm not really strictly going from 'good' to 'awesome'. Clapton is awesome. I just hate arranging them and picking favorites.
|
Darth Samuel
|
Ah, okay.

I'm not saying Tom Morello is bad by any stretch of the imagination, I just don't find him to be "great" or "amazing". He was overrated by far in my opinion. I admit he was an innovative, but none of the stuff he did was that great, relatively speaking. His talents were showcased at their best in "Killing in the Name." That song was the shiznitz, and Morello was at his best. I'm a Rage fan, but I don't wear Morello boxers to bed.
|
Darth Samuel
|
I don't wear Hendrix boxers, and I consider him to be a god among gods among gods. Regardless, He isn't going to be on any of mine, because I'm doing Classic Rock people.

It's just a figure of speech.
|
Scion
|
Testify is probably the best I have seen from Morello, and some of the stuff he did with Audioslave was pretty good (Like a Stone)

Darth Splinter

*Ahem*....
Samuel! Oh Samuel my good boy! It is your turn to post!
|
Darth Samuel
|
Gah! My bad.
Number 22
Adrian Smith and Dave Murray!
These guys are just amazing. The guitarists of Iron Maiden, they haven't dramatically changed their sound since they came out wiht their debut record. Even when Punk was Huge, they didn't change their sound for the Record Companies.
Songs:
Run To the Hills
Aces High
Number of the Beast
The Trooper
2 minutes to midnight
Fear of the Dark
So many more.

Darth Splinter

You might want to fix your pic!
|
Darth Samuel
|
Nah. The solos speak for themselves.
|
Sirak Sazen
|
Amen. I still think they should be higher up though. I expect eiter Jimi Hendrix or possibly Angus Young (my favorite) at #1.

Expect all you want. Ain't going to happen. I'm calling for Splinter to put either Chuck Berry or Robert Johnson as number 1, but who knows.
|
Journey
|
Blurgh... Iron Maiden...
I suppose if it is guitar Gods then either Chuck Berry (or more likely Robert Johnson) should be the pick, despite the fact that they aren't the best, simply the most revolutionary.

Don't diss Iron.

I'm an Iron Maiden fan. Love the selection, they're legit.
