New Forum Name?I just brought this up in the Grand Temple, but I'd like to get a more public response too, since it's a bit of a radical idea.
It was brought up before (but I couldn't find where since we had so many threads going when the Big Sith Change happened), should we rename the forum now that it's not exclusively Jedi centered?
The answer, overall, was yes. A hesitant yes in some cases (such as my own - I've become a bit attached to The Jedi Order (especially since it's my logo up there!)), but a yes nevertheless. So what do we rename it to? That was the next logical question. Most responses (including my own), were "The Force United", "The Unified Force", "The Universal Force" etc, etc, etc.
It's not a bad name (whichever variant), but what if we get a whole slew of new members in 2008/09 when the Star Wars TV show starts up that want to roleplay as bounty hunters (since it's looking like that's what the show will focus on)? What if a major senate roleplaying forum (if such a thing exists) shut down and they had a mass exodus to here? Many different things could happen that would land us back in the same type of situation "Well why is the forum only about Force users?!"
So I suggest a different name. One we already have.
Jedi, Sith, Bounty Hunter, and - most obviously - Rebel Alliance members... along with almost everyone else in the Galaxy Far Far Away... We're all some kind of Rebel, in the end.
All credit goes to Abba for what I feel is a genius name. It's our URL (rebels.myfreeforum.org), it could be our "real" name. Not only would this make it easier to find/remember the site for new members, but it also is just kind of neat to have our URL make sense finally 
So what do you think? Would you kindly vote in the poll up there and post a fuller opinion as a reply.

I agree 100 percent Rive, when Star Wars gains in popularity were going to have a wave of members come in and the current name of the forum doesen't really fit our entire outline of what we've become. I myself and many others have mostly always called this site Rebels from the URL so I don't think the transition will be hard.

Would it be possible to have rives new banner, but have a lightsaber flash up and illuminate it red for sith, or blue like just keep fading in and out.

I considered putting a pair of lightsabers where those two bars are, but that would sort of defeat the purpose of having an all-inclusive name, wouldn't it?
As for animation - there's the lag issue Butler mentioned. Our 56k users have a hard enough time already with the chat box and banners at the bottom. Not to mention the fact that it'd be a bit distracting to have it on every page.
However.... supposedly MyFreeForum recently started a webpage system. We may be able to put up a little page (like "rebelsintro.myfreewebpage.org") that plays a nice little flash movie - then redirects to the forum.

We can't change the URL, unfortunately.
Well, we could, but it would mean paying myfreeforums something like $200
Rebellion is a refusal to accept authority.
Anakin was a rebel by refusing to follow the Jedi Order (one could argue that all Sith are, in this sense)
Yoda and Obi-Wan were rebels by refusing to accept the Empire.
Han Solo was a rebel by smuggling.
Lando was a rebel by not joining the Mining Guild.
Ah... the list goes on and on. Most Star Wars characters are rebels of some sort - besides Stormtroopers and Imperial Officers, I suppose.

When this all began, Chick rallied followers to her, and was a Sith Empire. Little_Luke created a "rebellion" against Chick, and formed the Rebels, which were in essence the Jedi. When Abba created the forum, she maintained this name.

If you wanted to get technical, they're rebelling against the Rebellion. And later the New Republic.

I like the idea about maybe having a little intro, and if the people with the lower standard computers wanted to skip it, they could just click a little redirect thing that brings them here.

I had my own reservations - but I honestly can't think of anything more appropriate (although I did think of a few equally appropriate ones - but Rebels gains extra points for being our URL) names for an all-inclusive name.
I'm open to suggestions, but I personally couldn't think of anything that trumped REBELS enough to be worth the forum name NOT being our URL.
And other options just seemed lousy - something really non-starwarsy (Star Wars Combine is a good example) or something really boring (TheForce.Net Roleplaying Forum is a good example)

Rebels would be good if we also expanded on our other ranks such as Assassin, Bounty Hunter, Grey Jedi, etc.
However, currently, since this is a more jedi/sith oriented board, Force United seems more appropriate in my opinion.

Thats why theres things like ORS in the Rebel canon (as far as I know.). We don't need to expand on our ranks, problem is, every person who comes here wants to be a force sensitive, not a 'Imperial' or something.

As for a Criminal Ranking System. It's not a bad idea and it's totally feasible due to Orders getting hidden forums now (although depending on how many Orders we get it'll get to be a pain for Admins - since we see every forum).

The most basic rank of the Syndicate given to all members.
Syndicate Criminal (Assassin/Smuggler/Bounty Hunter/ Dark Jedi /Pirate) (Durge as Pict)
Can choose a sub-faction. This rank is given to those who have proven themselves and have chosen a sub-faction.
Elite Criminal (Boba Fett as Pict)
Elete members of the Syndicate these are snet on the most dangerous missions. Can recieve this rank from the Overlord or the Crime Boss over them.
Crime Boss- (Xizor as pict)
The ranks under Overlord, Crime Bosses are hand chosen by the Overlord. These five are a council of sorts to the Overlord and are his most trusted subordinates. Each control a sub-branch of the Syndicate. (Assassins, Bounty Hunters, Smugglers, Pirates, and the Militay.
Overlord (Zann as pict)
The highest rank in the Syndicate it can only be recieved by either killing the former Overlord or by being appointed as a replacement.

Umm, firstly she left because she knew she wasn't up to the task of leading, not allergies, and secondly, it was Little_Luke, not Chick who came up with Rebels, and then Abba who named this forum.

well, it kinda is and because it's new, it needs a little time to organize itself. Just like the Jedi did here, we got organized around January/February. though I did like when sith and jedi just plain out said I hate you and oh, they suck.

I was asking, then giving an example in Grey and Dark jedi. The only other rank system we could do AFAIK, is an Imperial or Republic one.
Whatever the case, we shouldn't worry about it too much. Concentrating on the crime syndicate one should be a priority, if we are indeed doing it.

I edited that post quite a few times, and didn't pay attention to placement, so whatever's clever.
Advisers, Spy/Infiltrator, Dealer, Gambler, and Second-in-Command could also be tacked on as potential ranks.
Adviser/Second-in-Command could be the equivalent of their Council, with Crime Lord being the "Grand Master." So it would look something similar to:

Still 2 more days before I close the poll - but it's looking pretty stable at 65-80% of people being in favor of Rebels, and a decently strong minority supporting The Force United.
I'll try to create alternate page templates, so once you log in you can see the title of your choice (The Jedi Order, The Force United, or I might even throw in a "The Sith Order" for fun), but REBELS will be the default and official title.
I'm unsure if myfreeforums.org provides us enough space to host a minimum of 3 separate templates. But one can hope.

That's a bit too far of a stretch in my personal opinion. Although I suppose "Rogue Jedi" could be an alternate option (like our Rank XIV and XV) for a high up criminal rank. Dark Jedi should stay on its own however, I think.

Yeah, like I said, it's a reach. I don't even think we should do "Rogue Jedi."
I guess if someone wants to be a type of saberist/force user for the crime syndicate, they could always do it through RP. Certain Bounty Hunters/Assassins and Pirates used lightsabers and/or knew of the force, e.g. Aurra Sing and Cade Skywalker.

We could always try that new domain idea, that way we'll be more likely to come up in google searches. Only real problem is the money issue, and I doubt many here have a job, or money of their own.

Agreed, but it is interesting to think about the future. I remain confident that the Star Wars TV series will bring renewed interest in Star Wars to the masses and thus new members. |
We could always try that new domain idea, that way we'll be more likely to come up in google searches. Only real problem is the money issue, and I doubt many here have a job, or money of their own. |
Yeah individual money support would be very hard, however a donation type thing would work, but most people on here are like young adolescents.

If the board does springboard with dozens of new members in the post-tv show period (as I'm hoping it will), several members should be 18-19 years old - since it isn't going on the air for another 2 years - I think (although the Clone Wars 3D show will be going on the air sooner - which may draw in some members also) - and hopefully would be able to float a couple of bucks into a paypal donation pool to allow us to buy a new domain redirector (cheap), remove ads from the forum (not so cheap), or - most ambitiously - perhaps even move our entire database to our own domain, freeing us from myfreeforums entirely (pricey - and a bit risky because the forum would effectively be shut down if we weren't able to raise the money to renew the domain fees the following year).
But, that's all in the future.

Yes all in the future, but good to plan out this type of stuff.
