New Domain

Well, since there is no Suggestions board I'll post it here.

I think Rebels should get their own domain, you have 309 reg users, most MFF forums change to their own domain once they reach the 200/300 users mark.

The "Ideas" board is a synonym for "Suggestions" Very Happy

Anyway, I don't disagree at all. I haven't really looked into it because I didn't feel like paying for it all myself, but by now perhaps some of our members are reaching the age they could assist with payment a bit... I'll look into it.

after a brief look, I can't see if myfreeforums itself offers a domain naming service. All I could find was their "Remove ads for 3 months/6 months/1 year" service.

A simple domain name that would redirect to here would cost $10 per year. A rather small sum that may be worth it.

Also, if anyone's interested, it would cost us about 82 dollars per year (40 British Pounds). A bit pricier, but it could be worth looking into if multiple people would chip in. Hm...

I'm assuming having our own domain would mean a "www" address? What other advantages would it give us?

i can do it for free...i already have.

but if you do it my way you will have a small bar running along the top of the window.

I can get a subdomain which acts like a domain. I have one with full FTP access, we could also use TipDots.com so we change it to www.rebels.at.tp or something. That way you also can get email accounts.

Yes, but someone needs to buy a database export, which is quite expensive.

There are 3 advantages I can think of.

1. It would likely increase our presence on Google Searches (the way Google works partly ignores "sites within sites" (Geocities, blogs, etc.)
This would bring in new members.

2. Easier to type in/remember.
This COULD increase new members/make them return once they've joined.

If we went for an all out move... (which would cost far more)

3. We'd gain insurance that we would keep our forum if MyFreeForum ever shut down.

4. We would also gain far more space - we could host multiple templates for the forum, host avatars here, etc.

5. No ads - ever

6. Faster page loading

Disadvantages?

1. Cost - we'd need to pay $10 per year to keep the simple redirect Domain Name, and much more per year to move our database to a new server (in addition to the one time cost ($160ish to move the database).

2. Slight risk of something going wrong during the database transfer.

3. Possible loss of members not knowing where the new forum location is (easily avoidable).

4. Cost Very Happy

correct me if I'm wrong, but don't advertisers pay you to run thier ads? Methinks that sounds like a way to counteract that little 10$ a month problem.

I have a domain, 600 GB bandwidth per month, 30 GB disk space.
I can host it on there if you want ^^. I'll give the MAIN administrator the login details to my account if it is absolutely necessary.

But, somebody would have to pay for a new domain as I am running quite short of money *looks in wallet*.

True (and if we did that, I'd insist upon Google ads, since they don't use pop-ups or annoying banners), but we'd still need to raise the money in the first place - and placing ads on a website that the users helped pay for seems just - wrong.

Noted and appreciated. That would come at the cost of the $10 domain registration and the $160 database move. But would avoid the very pricey and ongoing domain server upkeep.

I'll keep it in mind. Our main admin (Abba) isn't around as often as some of our sub admins (Myself and Skywalker&Vader most notably) so it might be better for one of us to handle the maintenance if we pursued this route.

Also, quick question, when you access the admin panel on this forum how big does the panel sa the forum is? Kb, Mb?

Since I don't have an income yet, I'd be able to mail two single dollar bills to Rive every year. Pay a fifth of the cost seems fair. Laughing Jeez, everybody could mail in two dollars. That would hold us for a while.

We clock in at about 120 Mb, currently.

Getting $10 a year doesn't seem too steep, that's if it is indeed yearly costs. I donate ~$5 frequently to my clan to keep our server up and running, and that's monthly.

I can't really. Currency issues and the fact that mailing the two dollars would cost more than the two dollars themselves.

Well, I can't donate anything. I am running the Pro host on my account, which is like $150 a year. So with that I am quite poor.

I don't mind giving an administrator access, I just need the OK.

Note: My hosting (account) ends on September the 12th so if you decide to move in close to that date, you might need to wait a couple more days before I can renew it.

I think it's all relative. We have Euro members who donate money to the server in our clan. I'm not entirely sure, but I think it automatically converts the cost. So 2 dollars of whatever the currency of someone donates, will be converted into how the payments are to be made.

At least that's how PayPal works.

Indeed it does, but they were talking about mailing money physically in a letter. Across international boundaries it would indeed cost more than $2 to send something to the USA. Within the USA it would cost 41 cents, which is a bit of a hefty fee to mail 2 dollars Razz

Eh, honestly I don't even pay attention to the ads on this site, and it'd be a lot easier than raising 10$ a month.

I'll agree there, they don't slow load times down for me so I could care less.

I block the ads entirely via Firefox addons, so they don't even load for me Laughing

I doubt it, the majority of our users are smart enough to not click on ads - I think.

But they'd still have to pay us to put adds on here. Would the cost perhaps be more than the $10 a year that we have to pay?

I think they work on clickage = money, but if there was a profit, it should be given to someone to hold, a treasurer if you will. I vote me, I need some new stuff.

They have 119,570 members. We have 300ish.

Based on that we'd be able to pay our mods about 2.8 smackers per month Razz

Due to private reasons, I cannot offer hosting on my account. It was hacked and thats all I can say.

However, I have another free host but can pay for a domain with 100 GB+ bandwidth.

Yes, sorry. I mass-deleted about 20 posts and accidentally went 2 or 3 posts too far, since the money discussion was what initially caused it to go off-track.
