Mass Effect 2

Sirak Sazen

I've never played the original Mass Effect and I've heard mixed reviews. Is it worth it?
Armia Delvron

The price has come down to the $20 range. It's definitely worth it at that price.

RPG-Shooter (heavier on the shooter than the RPG though) with far more strengths than flaws. From the same company that brought us Knights of the Old Republic 1.

Spoiler:

Anyway. I'm hoping this trailer is a fakeout, since they said we'd be able to transfer our Shepard from Mass Effect 1 and continuing playing as him/her.

Dakoth

Spoiler:

Perhaps zombie Shepard is finally a reality.

IM IN UR BASE TAGGIN UR SPOILERZ
Crozeus

I loved Mass Effect, played it so much. Yeah, we gotta be able to transfer over, or it's not worth it. Starting at lvl 60 ftw.

Sirak - a must buy.
Jiub

The problem with transferring over Shepherd is that you make some decisions affecting who Shepherd is. It would be difficult to make a game that could change according to what decisions you made in the last game.

Actually it would still be difficult, what about important people that you could choose to let die, or let live?

I think it's fair game to talk about stuff that happened in the previous game if it's a thread for the sequel Smile

That said: Major spoilers for Mass Effect 1 below!

I think they did specifically talk about how they were planning to handle certain aspects of that Jiub. Like Wrex would be completely omitted from Mass Effect 2 if you transfered a save file that had killed him.

It also wouldn't be toooooo difficult to worry about Shepard. I mean, basically it's just a matter of setting your Renegade score and having the game introduction have 2 versions depending on if you were good or evil - all the stuff after that would be able to run on the same dialogue trees as a "new" Shepherd - with a few special lines thrown in if you'd done something specific (killing Wrex being the obvious example still).
Jiub

Yes, but unless the galaxy is in anarchy in this game there is still the matter of if you let the council die or not. That would be one of the larger issues.
Dakoth

Well honestly, if theres any RPG developer that can pull it off, its Bioware.  The one thing I'm really hoping to see from this game though is better side planets.  The revolving door of rock/lava/snow got real old real fast, as did the 3 identical prefab structures on every planet. That was my only gripe about the original though, and they've promised to improve upon it.

Oh and I was just tagging your trailer spoilerz in case anybody didn't get to see it's little twist, It is fair that you should be able to discuss the happenings of the first game in a thread for the second.
Scion

That's obviously a fakeout, it would make no sense to kill off Shepard.  Plus, I want my shotgun-wielding beast to own some Geth noobs.

And fix planet exploration.  The back of the box said, "Explore over 27 planets!" and all it was was finding random crap while riding on the Mako.  BETTER SIDEQUESTS PLEASE!!!

I have to go through ME again, I accidently killed Wrex, who I liked alot.
Dakoth

When I'm going through a choice based RTS like fallout or mass effect my first time, I try and ignore my save/load button, since taking away that safety net makes it feel that much more real and immersive.  It was a really potent scene, and I wouldnt want to have detracted from it by just reloading and going about like nothing happened.  Really drives home thier whole "choices" theme.

Thats just me though.
shadowball2021

I loved the first one, can't wait for the second.  Razz

Same here.  Which is why Wrex is still dead.  Killed by Ashley nonetheless.

I... sort of... do that.

But the first time I play through any choice based RPG I tend to go...
"Alright. Let's save kittens from trees and max out my speech skill points!"

In other words, I guarantee myself the most favorable outcomes - forgoing combat skills (which can often make the first few big-bosses tough in some of the harder (generally Japanese) RPGs out there Very Happy )

I heard that the RPG Persona 3 (or 4 maybe...) inverts this and if you try to be a really nice guy you end up getting slammed with a bunch of really really horrible things happening to everyone around you later on. I want to try it for that rather unique design element.
Crozeus

Who else completed on Insane and got that lovely gamerpic?
Jiub

I save my game a lot, I am actually a compulsive saver. I just hate to have to replay the same part over and over. One thing I liked about KoTOr is that it let me save whenever I wanted.

Idk if you played fallout 3, but theres a quest in it thats a very very lovely example of that.
Lord Vexen

Oh ya that one was fun...having one evil and one good ensured I got both outcomes.
Crozeus

I'm starting on my good one now. What happens?

Tenpenny Tower?

Yeah. I think that's pretty much the only one I tried over and over and over to see if there was a way to get a near-perfect outcome (convincing everyone to let the ghouls in, telling the ghouls they can move in, receiving the ghoul mask, then killing Roy via a StealthBoy before he could reach the tower ----- doesn't work (unfortunately)).
Lord Vexen

No good ending for Tenpenny Tower unfortunatly. I always went with helping ghouls...but only because it was so damn fun to kill Tenpenny and Burke and get good points.
Armia Delvron

I'd always help them just because the feral ghoul mask is so darn useful (especially on the highest difficulty setting). Feral ghouls are a waste of bullets.

If you're going for max benefit - I think the best thing to do would be...

Make the human shop keepers leave.
Follow them out of the tower.
Kill them and take their keys.
Steal everything from their store caches (including valuable schematics and room addons (if your home is in Tenpenny Tower)).
Let the ghouls move in.
Kill THEIR storekeepers, take their keys, steal their stuff too.

Sure, Tenpenny's empty now and you helped to slaughter TWO groups of people... but you sure made a lot of money off of it Very Happy

EDIT: Ah... to keep things on topic. Since I DO like speechy things. I hope they have more of the purely dialogue quests. Like the ones in The Citadel with the jellyfish preacher and where you talked to the grieving pregnant widow about her baby.

I'd also like more quests related to your partners. Every one of them had a single quest related to them (Wrex's armor, Garus's failed police mission, etc.), but I'd like it if you could unlock LARGE amounts of extra content by interacting with your partner NPCs. Like being able to go to the big fleet of Tali's people if you've talked to her enough and fought with her for a significant portion of the game.
Crozeus

Tali sucks. I spent ages fighting with her to get the ally achievement, and I didn't even get it.
Armia Delvron

Hm... I think I got it (and Garrus) on my second playthrough.
I got Wrex on my first not even knowing the achievements existed Razz
Journey

I got Ashley on my first go around and Garrus and Wrex on the second.

Can't wait for the second one, personally, I don't care whether Shepard is transferable or not, part of the appeal of playing through it on my third time was actually the fact that I had a new character to work with with new abilities and stuff. Obviously though I'm pulling for more expansive and unique side quests though.

Wow. That's exactly what I did, Armia.

Journey wrote:

I'd actually be fairly satisfied if they just did something like the multi-play thing. If you transfer your Shepard then you get to start with one of your Mass Effect 1 mastered abilities. And then, once you finished the game - your future Mass Effect 2 characters would get to choose two extra abilities instead of one.

That's a rather substantial and unique benefit - but it doesn't force them to balance the very beginning of the game around you being level 20 with extremely high power.
Lord Embeion

I still have to finish my Vanguard playthrough so I can lolol lv60 in Mass Effect 2. There still using the Mass Effect 1 profile feature right?

RIVE ISN'T DEAD!!!

That would be worth it, I think.
Scion

Sorry for double post, but characters will be transferred over.

Dakoth

Its reassuring that they're going to build a persistient world like this, I'm glad Bioware didn't abandon that ambition.  Not that I truly thought they would in the first place.
Lord Embeion

I just watched the teaser trailer...
Spoiler:

ITS A LIE! NO FING WAY! ITS A LIE! He's gotta be under cover or something. ITS A LIE!

Rive Caedo

I don't think there's any way they could pull it off, but if they did...

My favorite suggestion is that the game opens with a big dramatic opening with Earthican hero, Spectre Shepard fighting against nearly impossible odds in a massive Geth invasion.

And then...

If you've transferred a Mass Effect 1 save file - Shepard overcomes the odds and wins.

If you've NOT transferred a Mass Effect 1 save file - Shepard is killed. You're presented with a scene of your new character at Shepard's funeral being granted specter status to replace him.

I think it's a GREAT idea... but... it requires double the voice acting (since you'd need to record male and female Shepard's lines AND male and female "you don't know what happened in Mass Effect 1, so here's this new guy" lines.

But, it also gives a pretty large degree of replay value - since even if you've played Mass Effect 1, you'd probably want to play through as Shepard's replacement afterwards since it'd be a slightly different experience.

AND if you don't have a ME1 save filed and played through only Mass Effect 2, it'd let them say at the end "Congratulations: but you've only seen one perspective of the story. Journey through Mass Effect 1 and return here to save Spectre Shepard and see how they would have saved the galaxy..." --- Thus making a bunch of people go back and buy copies of Mass Effect 1 that wouldn't have otherwise.

... Uh... hm... maybe it's more likely than I thought.

Random trivia I just found: I knew that the voice of the female Shepard was also the voice of Bastila Shan in Knights of the Old Republic, but I DIDN'T know that she also voiced Aayla Secura in the recent 2 part episode of The Clone Wars featuring that character... but I can totally hear it now.
Crozeus

Yeah, loads of KOTOR people are in ME. Like Carth.
Dakoth

Ahh good ol' carth, no one was better at clearing landmines the easy way.

HK-47?

Definition: 'Love' is making a shot to the knees of a target 120 kilometers away using an Aratech sniper rifle with a tri-light scope. Statement: This definition, I am told, is subject to interpretation. Obviously, love is a matter of odds. Not many meatbags could make such a shot, and fewer would derive love from it. Yet for me, love is knowing your target, putting them in your targeting reticle, and together, achieving a singular purpose, against statistically long odds.
Crozeus

Well, not HK.
Scion

The actress is Jennifer Hale, and she is the finest female voice actress out there.

Samus Aran-(Assorted Grunts)
Naomi Hunter- Metal Gear Solid
Emma Otacon- Metal Gear Solid

And that's just what I know off of the top of my head.

And if they do it the way Rive predicted, than I will have to play through ME more than once more.
Dakoth

Ah yes, the fabled grunt actor >.>
Rive Caedo

That would be fairly interesting to put on your resume:

- Metriod Prime 3: Corruption
            Samus Aran (ow.wav, ayhaaa.wav, kyaaa.wav, graaahh.wav, uh-ow.wav, saaaah.wav)

Pfft.  Link.  Mr. Game and Watch has a much more impressive voice actor.
Crozeus

Ok, I am kinda excited now.

Lord Embeion

DNA cloning imo
Crozeus

Good guess. Note what he says about first game choices affecting this game.
Lord Vexen

I have like 3 different game files on that...so how will that work for me?

Oh, and did anyone notice that the speeder type parts look suspiciously (sp) like the speeder scene in AOTC?
Lord Embeion

You'll most likely get to choose the saved file to continue.
Rive Caedo

Crozeus wrote:

While they spin it in a very exciting way, I did find it a bit funny that the first half of the video can basically be summed up as: "New Weapons" (which is a pretty darn common feature of sequels/expansions and "Hit Box Damage System" (which is a good thing, for sure, but certainly not anything innovative).

The second half is more interesting. I'm glad they're reconfirming that you can carry save files forward. For that reason, I'm currently building an "idealized" Infiltrator Commando save file - making sure all characters are alive and using multiple play throughs to max out persuasion/intimidate without spending any points in them.

All I can really say beyond that is I hope they don't make me wait a full year for my PC version of the game like they did with ME1.
Crozeus

OR

you could get an Xbox.
Rive Caedo

The day they make all Xbox games compatible with a mouse and keyboard is the day I buy an Xbox.

Until then, all of the crew of the Normandy's adventures will be on a PC for me or nowhere Smile

Besides, I'm already sort of invested in Mass Effect PC - my super-duper Commando/Infiltrator can't be turned into an Xbox save file as far as I know.

Actually it can...but it involves a really complicated process. My cousin did it with his.

I don't know how to do it personally though, I only know how to go Xbox to PC not the other way around.
Scion

To bhe fair Rive, it was only a 6-month wait.

Time becomes hard to understand when you are over 9000 years old.

Official E3 Trailer.

Sheppard is alive...for now.
