Jace's Earliest Memory

Jace’s Earliest Memory

Jace was taken to Coruscant by the Jedi at a fairly early age, and like most of the other Jedi, he doesn't remember much about his early childhood, family, or life before the Temple in general. But, he has one memory that will stick with him for life…

"Mom, when are we gonna get home?" a young Jace asked while sitting in the back seat of a land speeder, his parents in the front two.

"Soon honey; hold on tight!" his mother replied as she accelerated to the speeder's max.

He felt great as the wind whipped through his headtails, but, suddenly for some reason, he felt as if it would be the last time he’d have such fun in a land speeder, or with his parents.

He pondered that for a while, but ultimately shook off the thought. It wasn’t pleasant, and it didn’t seem very likely either.

After just a while longer, he and his parents had exited the speeder and were just unlocked the door to their home when Jace had sensed something inside their small dwelling on Glee Anselm, homeworld to the Nautolans.

"Wait!" he said in a hushed tone. “There’s someone inside…someone important.”

His parents trusted his instincts. He'd had such premonitions before, but they never understood or questioned how. They were just glad that he’d gotten them out of messes, or at least time to prepare for one. So, the two adult Nautolans removed blasters from their cloaks as Jace took his place behind the two of them as if it were a second nature to him.

“Ready?” Jace’s father asked.

“Yes,” Jace and his mother whispered in unison.

Tyvo, Jace’s father, kicked open the door, “Excuse me sir,” he said to a strangely-clad man, sitting in the middle of his home. “But, may I ask what you’re doing in my house?”

“Lower your blasters,” the man said in a calm manner. “I’m not here to harm you.”

Tyvo and Anlea (Jace’s mother), gave matching incredulous looks at the intruder.

“Aren’t you Tyvo and Anlea Aimira?”

“Yes…how do you know?” Tyvo asked, shooting a nervous glance in Anlea’s direction.

“Look, we have your credits! Just not here.” Anlea blurted.

“I’m not after credits either,” the man replied, “however, I am interested in your son, Jace.” He said now smiling slightly, as if he knew what was about to happen.

“What? Jace! Why?” Tyvo exclaimed, as Jace stepped out from behind his parental wall.

“Have you ever noticed your son doing something…well…extraordinary, or unnatural?” the man asked casually, as if questions like this were posed by total strangers often.

“Well, if we have, why should we tell you?” Anlea snapped.

“Oh, I’m sorry, I don’t believe I was able to introduce myself, what with blasters being pointed at my skull,” the man said, still speaking incredibly calmly despite the rising anxiety, “I am Jedi Master Miiren.”

Jace’s parents looked at each other and raised their blasters, “And we’re Senators,” they laughed.

“Right,” Miiren said after looking down the barrels of their blasters, “those won’t do you any good by the way.” And as he said that, the blasters just seemed to float away from their hands, and soon outstretched arms, straight into the so-called Jedi’s hands.

“Okay then, we believe you,” Tyvo said after glancing quickly at his wife again, “but what do you want with our son?”

“Well, I just happen to know that he does have certain special talents,” he said, now focusing his eyes on the young Nautolan Jace, “you can use the Force young one.”

Jace just stared at him, eyes wide, even for a Nautolan, mouth hanging open, “The…F-F-Force?” he stammered. He quickly gathered himself; he was good at that, “You mean that superpower from all of the stories?”

“Oh, the Force is no story,” the Jedi chuckled, “It is all around you, but that’s for later,” he said, returning his attention to Jace’s parents.

They just stood there, stiff and stone-faced.

Our son…the Force…this is crazy… Tyvo thought to himself.

“May I speak with you in private?” Miiren inquired.

“I suppose,” Anlea answered.

And just like that, Jace had been left standing alone, clueless in the main room of his house.

Me…the Force? Maybe I can be one of those, um, Jedi. That would be so cool! He thought to himself. We’ll see I guess. I should just wait and see what he talks to my parents about, he thought as he sat down on his couch…

“Jace?” it was his mother.

“Wha-a-a-t?” Jace yawned as he sat up, he must have fallen asleep.

“We have decided,” she began as his father and the Jedi Miiren walked into the room, “that you’ll be going with Miiren to Coruscant to become a Jedi.”

“REALLY!?” Jace near-screamed with excitement.

“Yes, we’re going to miss you Jace.” She said.

“Very much.” His father added.

At that instant his mother began to cry, and his father automatically took his place beside her.

“Its okay mom,” Jace said lovingly, as his expression changed from eager to solemn, “I’m going to miss you too, but I’ll see you again some day.”

Anlea began to cry harder. She knew that after today that she’d probably never see her son again, but she just couldn’t bring herself to tell him; it hurt enough to tell herself. She was sure that the Jedi would take care of that sad detail for her.

“Well, young one. We really do need to get moving.” Miiren stated as he nudged Jace ever-so-slightly toward the door.

Jace turned around to face his parents; they were both crying now. The little Nautolan, unaware of the implications of his leaving, walked over to his parents and gave them a hug as big as his little arms would allow.

“It’s okay, really,” he said softly, “I’ll be back I promise.”

…And that’s all that he could remember. He had been at the Temple around 10 years now, and he still hadn’t returned to Glee Anselm to visit his parents. In fact, he hasn’t been anywhere outside of a five mile radius of the Temple. But he knew, deep down somewhere, that he would see his parents one more time…

(That about does it. I’m sure a story like this has been posted a thousand times, but, I just thought it would be fun to write.)
