My internet in Glasgow sucks so bad that I can't even get onto speedtest.
According to my IPhone, the download speed is 284 kbps (!!!???) and the upload speed is at 221 kbps. It was up over 2MB when I first moved in aswell... |

Your is similar to mine when everybody is on the internet at once. My upload speed stays at 0.73 megs no matter what though. |

In America you pay for your speed, not your download limit, correct? We have shoddy speed, AND we pay to be able to download a certain amount.

Wow. This thread is about internet connections and you still find a way to attack me. Actually, Xander, it's more of a company thing. Some companies will put crappy internet in rural areas just because it costs less for the company and consumers don't really have much to choose from. The company I'm with has a few options: regular, Edge, and Gamer's Edge. Regular is 2-4 megs, Edge is 8 megs, and Gamer's Edge is 15 megs. We used to have regular, but in our new house we have Gamer's Edge, which makes me very happy. It also depends on how many people in your household are using the internet at any time, along with interference if you're on wireless, etc. |

I guess, but my point is your Internet is still based primarily around what speed you want, whereas ours has a 'cap' - which we're rapidly approaching so Mum's started turning the net off at night so I can't use it - not looking at pr0n or nothin. | ||||

Yeah. So for instance, I think we get 7 Gigabytes of download on peak - 12 pm to 12 am and 14 GB off-peak, 12 am to 12 pm.
So for example, if I downloaded 7 GB of music at 3 pm, we'd go back to dial up speed for the rest of the month. |

I was meaning in terms of bandwidth. While it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get 3 megs downloading a second, it does give an accurate gauge on how fast your connection is. pingtest shows how reliable your connection is. You could have a 20 meg a second download speed and still be lagging like hell over xbox live. |

The reliability of your connection. Generally, you need a 2 meg downlaod speed and a 0.7 and up upload speed to have a connection that won't screw with you or anything. But it all depends on a variety of factors.
While it's not an exact measurement of your actual speeds, it's a pretty good gauge of how your internet is. It could be compared to walking outside to see if it's cold out. You know that it's cold, but you don't know the exact temperature without checking. |

Good enough for me, I downloaded Left 4 Dead in 15 minutes, so what do I care. Only thing that takes me awhile to download are Blizzard games, because there downloader sucks. |

Still love playing Halo, it's so great to pick it up and play hardcore for 2-3 hours and get into a bit of a rythm. Very quickly you find whether you're 'on' or not, and you try and fix it if you aren't on. Partying up and playing multiple games with the same team is also great. Probably the same in other games but there's just something about Halo that I love. | ||||

That's generally the case even in American urban areas - though most people aren't even aware of it since the caps are around 25GB Actually, they're probably higher now. That was 4 or 5 years ago I was looking at caps and speed ratings for ISPs around the nation. |

Holy crap, yeah that's huge. We're upgrading next month so we get 21 GB on-peak and, assumably, 42 off-peak (since you get twice as much off-peak as on-peak) so that should eliminate my worries. |
