Indiana Jones 4 (Spoilers [spoiler] tag until June 1st!)

Personally, I loved it. I think anyone who doesn't has either grown too cynical over the years to get into the spirit of things or simply doesn't know a good thing when they see it.
It is certainly destined to sit proudly alongside my other 3 DVDs.
Spoiler:
First off, was it just me or did Indy's voice seem... odd for the entire first scene? Maybe it was just my theater. Luckily it sounded normal for the rest of the film.
The nuke scene was over the top for my tastes. That was the only scene in the movie that seemed to scream "hey! We can do digital effects now!"
One of the pre-release reviews I read said they described the skull and its history too much. But I thought it was all well written and well spaced out. I think it was essential to separate the real Alien Crystal Skull from the fake Human Crystal Skull that's been in the British museum since the 1800's.
The alien factor: I can understand how some people won't like it. But really, in films with The Face Melting Power of God, mind control potions, and 800 year old knights - is it really a stretch?
I did LOVE the fact that Indy compares them to archeologists. On the downside... I did think the 13 crystalline skeletons turning into a live alien was a little --- unnecessary and it didn't make much sense. But, oh well. I'll chop it being a factor of the alien's biology - allowing themselves to reconstitute their dead into a single lifeform as a means of preserving knowledge.
Wikipedia currently says that Spalko bursts into flame because her head can't handle the amount of alien knowledge... but I disagree - enough so that I'm considering editing it myself. The alien gives what I felt was an incredibly "judging" look. Spalko herself said earlier that the skull didn't "like" her and so now, at full power, the alien judges her and finds her unworthy of the knowledge. So he/she kills her mentally.
I don't really see Indy as the marrying type, but I did believe him taking his teaching more seriously throughout the film - so I could believe he's settling down. Still, it's not as good a topper to the series as Indy, Sallah, Brody, and Indy Sr. riding off into the sunset in Indy 3. But, who knows, maybe they'll be crazy enough to make an Indy 5?
The hat blowing in from outside is completely nonsensical and I would have hated it... It would have been a sour topper to the entire film. But, Indy Jr. Jr. not getting the hat passed on to him - as everyone expected, was awesome enough to counteract it.

Bah! Go on opening night did ya? I'll most likely go watch it this Saturday. So did Indi save the world from Armageddon with the 13 crystal skulls? =p

Spoiler:
Armageddon was not involved. 13 Crystal Skulls were.
Thar Kast
i was actually disappointed.
Spoiler:
i mean i know the other films are great and all but come on all that agent of the goverment for awhile come on.
Rive Caedo
Spoiler:
What? You mean the stuff about Indy serving in World War II?
Last Crusade occurred in 1938. Three years prior to America becoming involved in World War II.
I think it's fair to say Indy would become directly involved rather than running off to South America or something merely on the basis that he's a good guy, but if nothing else - Crystal Skull makes it clear that Henry Jones Sr. died only in the past few years (keeping in mind that Crystal Skull occurs in 1957).
So Henry Jones Sr. - the man who said: "The quest for the grail is not archeology; it's a race against evil. If it is captured by the Nazis, the armies of darkness will march all over the face of the earth." isn't going to let his son get away with not fighting the Axis forces as best he can.
Scion
I loved it, except
Spoiler:
THe whole Nuke scene just made me laugh, I don't care if the fridge was lead-lined or not.
Indy's voice was wierd at first, but it corrected itself.
I loved his father status, great twist in an otherwise predictable plot.
I am so glad that the main villain had psychic abilities that were introduced and never used again.
Apparantly swinging on vines is faster than cars racing throught the jungle.
Everyone knows Soviets had evil tree killing machines.
The real treasure was knowledge, lol.
Lord Vexen
It was good...but not comparable to Raiders or any of the other movies.
Rive Caedo
I think it's quite comparable to Temple of Doom
I know a few people that have said it even measures up to Last Crusade, but I do disagree with that. They're both similar films, but I think Last Crusade trumps almost every aspect of Crystal Skull.
Spoiler:
I will, however, give Crystal Skull's ant scene superiority to Crusade's rat scene.
As for Raiders. I think it's safe to say that's untouchable. It's what defines the "New Adventure" genre (that was itself spawned from the 1930's adventure genre) that has spun off into movies like The Mummy and National Treasure. It's the original - and you can't touch that.
Xander Vos
I have yet to see it, although I've been meaning to. I must admit to only having seen one Indy film though, which I think was Raiders.
Rive Caedo
My word, Xander. How on Earth have you gotten by in life without knowing the proper reply to "genius of the restoration" or how to count to twenty in Greek or how to spell deity names in Latin?
See Last Crusade!
Lord Embeion
Spoiler:
Hehe, just saw it. Must say Area 51..LaWl. I did like the quick snap of the Arc though. Like you said Rive the Nuke scene was a bit over the top and how he walked out of the fridge is like a god given gift of immortality. I did laugh when he yelled "YOU DON'T KNOW HIM!" 10 times =D
Lord Invictus
I liked it a lot,
Spoiler:
but I wasn't a huge fan of the UFO ending.... Oh well. Best part:
"Stop telling the kid to go to school. It's his choice."
"He's your son."
"Why the hell didn't you force him to go to school!"
It's funnier in the movie....
Lord Embeion
Ya I have to agree with you. They did go a bit overboard with the effects and all "Cause they can"
Lord Vexen
I saw it a couple of days ago and...
Spoiler:
I thought it was great. The nuke scene was way over the top...but cool. The whole Mutt being his son thing was pretty ghey though. It was not needed and kinda made me POed as the suprise aspect. One of my favorite parts of the movie was the quick shot of the Arc of the Covenant. I thought it was hilarious how the Soviets ignored such a powerful object.
Rive Caedo
Spoiler:
I was totally expecting Mutt to be his son. I'm glad they didn't wait until the end of the film to reveal it - because that would be rather cliche.
I actually find the name to be rather genius. Since a mutt is a mixed-breed dog of unknown descent and Indy's name is taken from "the dog".
You do bring up something interesting though. The nuke scene WAS cool. So I suppose if they HAD to do something over the top... I'm glad it was cool
I watched Last Crusade last night. I had entirely forgotten that it references the Ark too. It's a great moment, so I'm surprised I had forgotten it.
When Indy and Elsa in the catacombs beneath Venice, they run across a particularly elaborate etching on the wall.
Elsa: "What's this?"
Indy: "Ark of the Covenant."
Elsa: "Are you sure?"
Indy: "Pretty sure."
Lord Embeion
Ya when they showed that last week I found it pretty funny. I do hate how they call him Henry throughout the new movies. I thought his name was Indiana >.>
Rive Caedo
It seems that his friends and foes call him Indiana - his nickname. Whereas people with professional ties... don't.
Spoiler:
Since we saw two different people from the university this time (Ox and the dean early on in the movie) - and they weren't especially friendly with Indy (like Marcus Brody was). They call him Henry. But yes, I would have been happier if Ox had called him "Jones" when he was going crazy.
Butler_Swan
I gives it B-
Rive Caedo
That sounds about right. I'd probably go with a solid B.
It's worth a B+ to me personally simply because I was ready for it to be a D or worse
Lord Invictus
I'd say (as a percentage, not a grade) 94.67342345231456219%, but that's just me. M'kay, that's an A or A-.
Tom
6/10.
It just didn't feel like indy imo.
I miss the gun gags, the useage of the whip, the picking up of the fedora in a tight situation. and most of all I miss Indy running about.
Oh well, it could of been much worse.

I agree with all of that, except I'd give it 7/10.
He definitely didn't use his whip enough, or gun. Too many cars and not running around, but I guess it's logical since he is 18 years older.
Spoiler:
The biggest bummer of the whole movie was the aliens...
The rest of my vote vanished to the space BETWEEN the space!
Scion
I give it a high 8.9ish, enjoyable, but just as fun to fault with on the car ride back.
Rive Caedo
I would agree that it did (in retrospect - I didn't realize it while watching the movie) seem a bit odd that Indy's used a gun in all 3 movies (er... I'm actually not sure about Temple of Doom, since it's been so long since I've seen it), but didn't shoot at all in this one.
Spoiler:
Although he did use a rocket launcher and plenty of other characters were shooting hundreds more shots than their AK-47's could hold in reality
I think the whip usage was comparable to the old films though. He used it to swing across a the crate room and... one more time that I've suddenly forgotten. And maybe one or two more times I'm forgetting.
I think the only times he used it in Last Crusade was at the very start of the movie (as Young Indy) and to swing into the locked room of the Nazi castle.

I do not believe he fired it in Temple of Doom, not even during the intro.
Rive Caedo
Well I'm intending to watch it sometime this weekend, so I suppose I'll find out for sure
Tom
I meant the gun gag in Temple of doom is when the 2 arab swords men run up to him, and he smiles, and goes to pull out his gun, but hes lost it.
Rive Caedo
Right, and Last Crusade's is when he shoots the Nazis with one of their own guns and Henry Sr. says flabbergasted
"Look what you did!"
"Come on, dad!"
"I can't believe what you did!"
(and "Look what you did!" is later repeated by Brody)
Although...
Spoiler:
We DID get the genius moment of Indy popping up and blowing the blow dart into the wielder's own mouth. That was awesome and almost worth the price of admission all on its own.
It also got the biggest reaction out of the midnight showing I was at.
"Ooooooaaah!"
(then one or two guys near the back of the theater) "YES!"
Tom
Yeah but that scene was just plain weird...
It just seemed the film didnt know which mood it wanted to be in, it was like Last Crusade collides with Temple of Doom. As i found the middle of the film quite dark and sinsiter with all those creepy people running round that grave site, and it seemed very reminicent of TOD. (Although i agree it has the best poster of the 4 films, got it the other day )
But that scene was never gonna beat the Indy shooting the Arab scene, although now i think of it, maybe i just wanted something like Raiders or Last crusade, but just got something that couldnt measure up to either.
Darth Splinter
Spoiler:
I thought the movie was great, but there were a few let downs.
I guess Area 51 is only protected by 5 gaurds and a flimsy gate.
The fridge scene made me cringe, especially with the cutesy prarie dog. That wasn't needed.
Monkey scene could've been removed.
I had no problem with the aliens. IMO, it's more believeable than a golden ark that spews evil souls and blows up/melts faces.
I smirked at the quick nod to the ark in the warehouse.
I thought it was almost better then Temple of Doom.
Dork of Mordork
He used his gun in the Temple of Doom, but only while in Shanghai. Willie dropped it cause it was "hot" while they were in the car chase. >.>
I just finished watching it a minute ago. (Doom)

What I didn't get is, why poison and sharpen both sides of the dart?
Dork of Mordork
Well I doubt it was poisoned on both sides, or sharpened. But a small dark of that size could easily penetrate with the right amount of force.
Lord Embeion
It simply choked him
Rive Caedo
Hm... I suppose I'll bump this thread, although this isn't specifically Crystal Skull related.
Fellow named Patrick Schoenmaker (no direct link because he also does some (tasteful) nude art) made these over the course of the past few months apparently. I find them neat in the same way I found the original Clone Wars neat. Reminds me of old Disney animation. Makes me wish they'd do something like this for real...
