How to Use GIMP

Ok, I'm really new at this. How do you use GIMP? I cant even get any images on there! Could some one give me a walk through?
Lord Embeion

My best advice is.... read tutorial after tutorial. Also check out video ones on Youtube.
Cimil

Ok, I've started making images but how do I post them here?
Io Lee

Go here

www.photobucket.com

create an account from there you can upload images from your computer.
Lord Embeion

Ya, Photobucket gives you a link, an IMG code, and a HTML code.

On this forum for the image to show you use a IMG code.
Lord Invictus

I joined photoshop and downloaded GIMP. I created an advertisement for another site I play on. The ad is called FF advertisement.xcf but I don't know how to get the image into photoshop. Can you help me?
Adenn

*Photobucket. Razz

When you save it as a file type, don't save it as xcf, although I highly recommend it. What I mean is:

You're done with your image. Just save it as an xcf like:

Image.xcf

Type that in. Then go to save as and type in:

image.png
image.jpeg
image.jpg

And when you upload it, MAKE SURE it's the png/jpeg/jpg one.
Lord Embeion

best image one IMO is .PNG

So how do you take images from the internet and put them in GIMP 2? And also, I used photobucket. Just a typo.
Adenn

Oh that's extremely simple.

Just right click on an image (EX: your avatar) and click on "save picture as". Also, make sure it's saved in "My Pictures" in the folder you want.

*Optional: I highly recommend you create specific folders to put your images in so you don't look through for them in a traffic on pictures.
Lord Invictus

Thanks. But how do you increase the size of an image?
Adenn

Just go all the way to the top of your GIMP window and click on layers>scale layer and increase the size.

Or image>scale image
Lord Invictus

I just created my first image and I saved it as:
forumwarad.jpg
but when I try to upload it no image pops up and it says my album is empty. Is there an idiot's guide to uploading stuff to photobucket?
Lord Embeion

Use .PNG
Lord Invictus

It still isn't working. My image is called:
forumwarad.PNG
then after that it says -5.0 (RGB, 3 layers) 500x500

I go to photobucket.com and on the right it says upload and has three boxes to type in. I type in forumwarad.PNG and it says it was successfully uploaded. Then it says at the bottom:
There is no content in this album. Use the uploader above to add images and videos to your album.
Adenn

No, just click on browse and look for your image in "My Pictures". Then double click on it and then press "upload".
Lord Invictus

Thankyou. By the way, just made myself a new sig! I know it's not fancy but it's good enough for me.  Cool
Lord Invictus

Besides making something a background image how can I add it to the picture? So far, if I have a battle scene or what not I cannot find any good stormtrooper or clone pictures to add in without making a whole new background.
Lord Embeion

Go on Youtube and type in

GIMP tutorials
Lord Invictus

All of those are completely useless. By the way, how do you make animations as well as putting images in.
Lord Embeion

actually there extremely helpful for the starter. Watching is better then just reading text.

Yeah, like he said, they're actually pretty helpful. Adding borders, adding fonts... Wink  Wink
Lord Embeion

Most importantly it shows you what all the tools do, which comes in handy the most.

That says nothing about taking online images and putting them into GIMP. Copy and paste doesn't work and the only way to make anything is to make it the background.

Online images?

Ummm save them to your computer. Then upload them through GIMP with 'Open as Layers' under File.

I don't think everyone can learn from a video, personally I think I learn best when reading it because it's much easier to read it, stop, then go do it and then continue on. If you're watching it you have to watch closely, stop, try to remember where they did it, go back, replay, try to remember, lather, rinse, repeat. Sad But that's just mean, though a lot of my experience is hands on and little tutorials. yay for success!

Ya which is still a tutorial.

I can a video easy because you can watch how they do it.
Ga'nen

I don't think I stated it wasn't.
Cimil

Ok, how do you blend seperate pictures together?
Lord Embeion

Use the Eraser, Lasso, and Smudge tools.
Adenn

Or to be more simple and easier:

Lasso, feathering

:p
Lord Embeion

Eraser can bring a nice hard edge if your looking for a 3d effect.
Ga'nen

I suggest masking if GIMP has it, and if it has mastered even the pen tool then you will find yourself in the best position for real good blending.
