How I Met Your Mother

Who else likes this show?

Absolutely one of my favourite shows on television at the moment, definately the new Friends. Smile

This thread will be legen--wait for it---

dary!

Anyway, I like the show, especially since it has so many linkages to other things I like (NPH = Doctor Horrible, What's her name = Willow on Buffy, one of the writer/co-producers = the wife of Dave Kellett).

It's not something I really follow though, probably since I get enough of "the funnies" from The Daily Show and Colbert. If The Daily Show ever became The Weekly Show (or, heaven forbid, was canceled entirely), I'd probably migrate over to watching sitcoms like this and The Big Bang Theory (has some pretty good nerdy jokes usually) more often.

If I hate friends with a firey passion should I not watch this?
Rive Caedo

It depends on what aspect of Friends you hated.

If you're like me and hate laugh tracks, then - unfortunately - this show has one.

If you hated the romance backdrop of Friends (particularly in the later years)... I'd say this is more underplayed than that, but it's definitely still there.

I like laughtracks not because they make me feel like I should be laughing when I don't, but just because it's now a kind of classic, like the opening crawl to Star Wars, which looked really outdated in a film made in 2005 but was awesomely cool in 1977.

Also, I'd disagree on your second point, HIMYM actually has more of a love plot than Friends. The creators were making it with the backdrop of 'sitcom is dead'. They wanted to make a show that proved that with a little extra heart, and a little less insulting eachother, a show can go a long way.

TV Tropes can explain what I was saying better than me:

Dragged out to a ridiculous extent on Friends with Ross and Rachel.

   * How ridiculous, you ask? It took from the first episode of the ten-year show til the very last episode for them to finally get over the Will They Or Wont They.

How I Met Your Mother did this fairly believably for the first season with Ted and Robin, even though we know from the first episode that they won't, ultimately, end up together. Currently, the Will They Or Wont They torch has been passed to Barney and Robin.

Friends was constantly playing up that angle for their commercials, largely to attract a female demographic. Most/all of the ads I see for HIMYM play up the comedy angle.

Fair call, I was too young to remember the adds for Friends. Though mind you there seems as much sexual tension between Ted and Robin as Ross and Rachel.
Rive Caedo

I'm not sure if I'd even call it tension. Since it's not a question of "will they or won't they end up together" since we were told up front way back in Season 1 that they don't end up together. 25 years later his kids' mother isn't her and I don't believe they've even met her.

I mean, you could do some interesting stuff with them ending up together, but then she dies or moves to Alaska or something and Ted needs to settle for "second choice" girl. But that seems a bit dark for a sitcom.

No matter the case though, they can't ride off into the sunset Friends style --- unless they decide to retcon Season 1 of HIMYM.
Retconning a sitcom? That's just weird! Razz

I know they won't end up together, but there's still a lot of Will they or won't they get back together, because at least throughout the first two seasons there's a lot of "I like Robin again!" or "I like Ted again!"s like between Ross and Rachel throughout Friends.

There's a lot of speculation that the mother is Victoria, but I hope not, her actress creeps me out ever since I saw her in an episode of Monk. She just seems way too fake.
