Ugh. If it involves france it is NOT war. It's "Zere, over zere! Ze Germans are attack-ing! Run for ze homes!" And that's the military leader. Don't get me started on the civilians.

It appears that you choose to be a citizen of a country (a real country) and then there are a number of roles that you could play to be a part of that country. As I said, looks interesting, but I'm already a little too busy.

Free online game where you create a character to live in the world.
I used to help at an iron manufacturer, but now I'm having my character join a company that pays better... kind of hard to find in Germany, but I will.
