E3I think Microsoft has just ruined console gaming for me altogether.

I'd say more, but the things I say are probably going to get me banned.

<3 Microsoft.
The 360 will destroy the PS3 - again.

[Rant]
If Sony drops out of the console market,(which is now a viable option, they better have something F***ing amazing tomorrow at thier showcase) Microsoft will have the majority of the market. (PC and 360)
With those being the only options for 'high end gaming' (Wii is in another market now), we will have to turn to only one entitiy for gaming: Microsoft.
Does this remind anyone of the market crash in 83 I believe it was? All it would take a single overhyped game and everything could crash in on itself again.
Even if that didn't happen, with only one place to go for gaming, it will become stagnant (No direct competition=worse for gamers)
Let me add I do not care about FFXIII landing on 360, more people can enjoy it. I care about the long term effects of something like this happening (Nintendo did not become relevant after losing FFVII until the Wii, unfortunately.)
[/rant]
I seriously thought Sony would pay through the roof to keep this. Just goes to show money is the only thing people care about in the world.
Faith in Humanity=lowered.

Ugh... another PS3 vs. 360 war. They're are almost the same thing. Look at the Wii which actually causes physical activity and broken appliances, and there is a different type of console. But I still prefer PS3.
I actually have never been a fan of the Final Fantasy series....

Woot!
I don't own either of the powerhouse consoles, but I do know people with 360's - so maybe I'll actually get a chance to play XIII now! Wahoo!
I'm always a fan of competition, but lack of competition was NOT what caused the video game crash of the mid 80's. The problem was we had way TOO MANY consoles (multiple Ataris, Coleco, Magnavox, Tandy, Odyssey, Commodore - and others I can't personally remember) and video games and nearly all of them were terrible - people lost faith. Nintendo ended the crash by releasing a single high quality console with quality games (the NES). Nintendo ended it through being the middleman approving all games for their console (which all 3 current manufacturers do) and preventing scams.
That's not to say Microsoft completely dominating the powerhouse console market couldn't lead to a dark dark road. It would just be the inverse of the 80's road.
Sony has dozens of other markets besides video games. Any failure on their part would likely only be temporary. They'd regroup, reformulate, and release the Playstation 4 specifically designed to corner the Microsoft competition.
The big press briefing Wii announcement was an odd one. They're releasing a small attachment for the Wiimote that increases its motion sensing levels - supposedly.
It's sounding like a Power Glove level fiasco to me. The Wiimote is already incredibly sensitive to even the smallest motions (you can hook it up to via bluetooth to your computer and watch the motion sensors), it's just that no one (besides Nintendo) has actually USED this sensitivity. I don't see how making it even more sensitive will improve the situation.

Yes, but Atari had 85% of the market share, released E.T., and it proved to be the catalyst. Also if Microsoft had a near monopoly, we would end up getting more crap like Vista (And the 360 for that matter).
Nintendo's new thing (peripheral?) looks dumb, you no longer see a jack to plug in the Nunchuck, meaning this 'improved detection' can only be used for games with a Wiimote only. And yes, MP3 already proved the Wii's motion detecting is fine.

The redesigned dashboard looks really dumb, and it isn't optional, now you guys are going to have to walk around with Miis. Also, how does it feel owning a undersized HDD? HOw those 20 GB working for you?
Microsoft's motion sensing thing looks like pure crap as well.
If they hadn't announced FFXIII, I would have voted that press conference as maybe the worst they've done.

The new dashboard looks like Apple's iPod Coverflow. It works reasonably well for music, but I don't see it working well for menus. I'm not sure what the point of Xiis are, but they do look profoundly Miish.
I'm not sure what your (a bit antagonistic) strike against the XBox hard drive is? All new XBox's (except the arcade) are going to have 60 GB's starting next month for no extra cost.
I can't find any official info on Microsoft doing a motion sensing controller. I'd think it'd be a bit late to do something like that at this point - unless you bundle them with motion sensing games (in which case the game would cost like $100).
ALL the E3 showings this year were and were expected to be weaker than previous E3s because E3 has been MASSIVELY scaled down from its previous incarnations.

*deliberately double posts*
You know, I thought Scion was getting a bit too "into it" - then someone sent me a link to a post on the IGN boards. Some guy with over 15,000 posts says...
| Out_Kast3000 wrote: | I really do hate Microsoft, I really do.
The reality is I shouldn't hate them for this. Microsoft did what they felt they needed to do in concern for their place in the video game industry and so did Square-Enix. I don't care though, emotions don't work that way. Right now I hate them and hope they die. I have these thoughts about them that I won't go into detail here. Usually I don't allow myslef to show too much emotion in my posts in how I actually feel about things of this nature, but this was like every bone was being ripped out of my body when I saw the end of that press conference. I knew it right away when I saw the Square-Enix boss come back up. I knew something was going to happen and I knew I was going to hate it. I knew that I wasn't going to be able to look at Final Fantasy XIII info for a while without cringing. I'll get over it some time, maybe tomorrow after I sleep on it, maybe not, whatever. It's seriously not that big of a deal and I will rationalize this whole debacle at some point while sitting, thinking to myself.
I'm not a fanboy. I am a fan of Sony Playstation and their products. I don't care what people say, but I do have a certain loyalty to a console maker who I've known for their great franchises and consoles for over a decade. I admit that. I want to see them do well, just like a fan of anything wants to see that thing do well. But I don't let it cloud my thoughts against other console makers. My thoughts and feelings can't change the reality of a situation which is why that's just stupid. I say the truth, supported by facts.
As FFXIII goes as a game, I also feel that this disrupts the development process. The power that the PS3 possesses over the XBOX 360 will not be fully realized in this game because the XBOX 360 will bring it down. ANd just the fact that they're now working on 2 consoles is a blow to development.
I've always felt a distaste for Microsoft, I've never been afraid admit that. Many of my posts here have been about that. I hate their method of business, and I hate how they put out some **** products such as the XBOXs. It's just totally disrespectful to put out something so faulty like the XBOX 360. I wish they didn't exist, at least not in the console video game industry. But it's always been more about the fanboys that get me. I didn't hate the XBOX 360 as much as some people liked to portray me. I hate Halo, but I don't hate every XBOX 360 exclusive franchise. I don't hate any franchise just because it's on a particular. I give praise when it is due. But I will also admit that I'll also admit I have no not to give as much praise to some XBOX franchises just because of how overrated I was seeing them onhere. I was just so disgusted with the fanboyism agains the PS3 and Sony. This is why I've felt the need to be so aggressive, even to the point people may feel that I've been a dick(which I don't actually care). I'm going to say what I feel needs to be said, that's what the internet is for.
People don't like a lot of things that I say, or the way I go about spreading my thoughts and feelings. I don't really care, as I've said this forum is a place for you to convey your thoughts and beliefs. I say what I feel on anything and I don't have to care about how anyone feels about it. The fact that people get angry at some of the things I say isn't a reason for me to stop saying what I feel. I don't care how people feel about me in real life when I say how I feel about certain topics. It probably makes me look like a dick or whatever, but I'm not going to worry about how other people feel on the internet especially.
I don't feel my opinion is worth more than anyone else's here. I don't think that people should care about what I say just because it's me. But I will call out stupidity, and there's a point when opinion isn't just red v. blue. They have certain standards that need to be attained when categorizing them into how good they are.
I'm aware of the fact that there are a lot of users on this board who don't like me. But at the same time much of it is just bandwagon hate because of a sheep/high school mentality many users on the Vesti have. I joke around a lot and make a lot more useless spam threads than I used to. I make more posts about anime than I used to. People don't like that, and for some reason to take it to a level of seriousness that they shouldn't. But if I stop just because they don't like it, they would. I can't allow anyone else to control me. I control myself. I feel that there is a lot of hypocrisy and double standards based off this bandwagon hate against me. I can make a thread and people will get angry(or at least act as if they are) despite the fact someone else could make it and nobody would care. And for some reason people feel they have some sort of say in what can be posted here. They rule nothing.
I've seen over the last several months the fanboyism go down much against the PS3. Obviously it's seen a big increase in sales over the last several months and seen price drops and amazing games like Metal Gear Solid 4. I haven't felt the need to be so agressive when it comes to the consoles and the console wars. I don't have to call out every fanboy because he said something that was wrong. And really, it's just gotten to the point where I don't want to always post about video games. I can just sit back and post about other things and post about the consoles whenever I feel the need to.
Final Fantasy is probably me favorite video game series of all time. This won't change. My feelings for the Playstation brand are nothing when it compares to what I feel about games. I've had some of my greatest experiences on Final Fantasy games and I love them. I care about the games first and foremost, and that's what I will always care about because that's what matters.
But seriously, this is nowhere near the end of PS3 or Sony. I laugh when I saw the thread about "I'm selling my PS3". The great thing about them is that there lineup hasn't been just about FF. It's been about a multitude of great titles. God of War III, Tekken 6, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy Versus. These are all just the headliners of an amazing Playstation 3 lineup still. The PS3 is also about it's extremely strong hardware in comparsion to other consoles(XBOX 360 fail rate 33-40%) and it's featues such as Blu-Ray. It's still a much better buy thnan any other console on the market because of it's value. This won't change, and I still see the PS3 outselling the XBOX 360 by a wide margin whe it comes down to it. Not to mention we haven't see Sony's E3 yet. People want to say they're down(when they're not), yet they still have another day tommorow and a lot of stuff to show.
I really don't want to be on the earth right nowanymore. I'm not specifically talking suicide(even though I feel that way somewhat), but I need to get into another world. Like a dream, a video game, or television show etc. I need to do something to get my mind of all of this. Am I taking it way too seriously? Probably, but I, like every human lacks any type of control over their emotions. This is just how I feel And right now I'm so emotionally unstable that I just felt the need to type all of this and I don't care how it looks.
Maybe I'll come back tomorrow and watch Sony/Nintendo's e3 conference, maybe I won't come back. At this point none of that is dominating my thoughts right now. I have other things on my mind, obviously. I'd just rather get some sleep at this point(which I've yet to do) and make it go away. |

Changing hard drive models you mean? More storage for your buck is always nice. I'm not sure what sort of negative reaction you could have to that.
More significant was the removal Playstation 2 perfect backwards compatibility. That was one thing I gave a few points to Sony for since (at least as far as I've heard) the 360's Xbox backwards compatibility is emulated and incomplete... and then they took it away on the newer models.

LAst year everyone was saying things like "Sony confuses it's costumers with to many SKU's." or " Sony can't make up there mind with what they want."
Not to mention all early adopters who got screwed with the 20 GB, which Microsoft now thinks is insufficient. (Which it truthfully is, with Rock Band DLC alone my firend has used up over half his HDD.)

I completely disagree with that sentiment!
I liked Star Wars Galaxies when it initially launched. I can only imagine Bioware will do a far better job than Sony did. A Star Wars MMO is a fantastic concept - even more so than Warcraft, in my opinion. A cash cow is only a problem when they're deliberately exploiting people out of money (a nice example being the companies releasing a DVD - then a month later releasing an extended edition with no prior announcement. The fans end up buying both releases). As long as it's good and fun - bring on the milking!
Even better, now they'll have an open ended storyline that they can do practically anything they want, instead of Galaxies Episode IV time period that made them incredibly restricted. AND it will make sense to have tons of Jedi and Sith running around.
I am more than a little bit concerned that EA announced it instead of Bioware or Lucasarts and that they're already saying "2009". If it was just Lucasarts/Bioware - I'd bet they'd push it back to 2010 and make it good. With EA cracking the whip... I bet it'll be out - incomplete - in 2009.
I do hope they'll make some sort of player housing system. Since Galaxies' housing system was a really well done feature. Although I hope they'll also streamline it so that the housing system is somewhat separate from the content like dungeons. Galaxies downfall was that it took way too much time to get anywhere - and even when you got there there wasn't much content to speak of.
That's definitely what Warcraft got right compared to the MMO's before it (and several of them after it). Each zone is rather unique, they're small enough that you usually don't need to cross vast fields of nothingness to get where you're going, and meeting stones and various teleportation systems let you get to the meat (dungeons and such) quickly.
It's just too bad Warcraft never put in that "instanced player housing" they promised. It would have been nice to have a place to hang your trophies like Star Wars Galaxies had.
EDIT: Afterthought:
Another advantage over the Classic/Prequel time period. They can have an entire Mandalorian class and cities and quests and stuff in the game. That doesn't excite me overly much, but I'm sure there's plenty of people it will.

I also loved the original SWG, especially the part where not every 10 year old idiot could be a jedi. Also KOTOR's combat system (If it continues to use D20 and Bioware's famous pause-unpause gaming) will work horribly for an MMO.
My last complaint is that storylines in MMO's=Not good, and both canon KOTOR endings left many directions the series could go. (It also feels less special being a Jedi when everybody is one, again, one of the better ideas of SWG.
EA announced it because they own Bioware and Lucasarts wasn't at E3, I believe.
If they somehow fix these problems, I am all for it.
EA did impress me this show however, I think thier lineup rivaled Microsoft and Sony. Mercenaries 2, Spore, Crysis:Warhead, and Dragon Age:Origins, all looked amazing.
|
Rive Caedo
|
Well, you won't be able to pause-unpause, but the core system isn't horrible I think as long as it's primarily a PvE game.
Bioware is usually fairly innovative. It wouldn't strike me as a complete impossibility that they could attempt to put an entirely new spin on the MMO formula. The Matrix Online tried (and failed, in my opinion) to create an ongoing storyline. Maybe Bioware can pull it off more successfully.
KOTOR 2's only real indicator for a sequel was the fact that Revan had flown off alone to the Unknown Regions in search of "The True Sith". It's not like they left us on a cliffhanger that demanded a sequel

The comedic factor is 3 fold.
The biggest factor is the trailer is soooo mid-90's.
The second factor is that it's obvious that their team had nothing to show for E3, so they threw this together in 15 minutes.
The third factor is... how can you not crack up after the twentieth time they show the logos?

Fat Princess looks like DotA based on those screenshots. Although a bit more cutesy and small scale (and likely more refined).
| Scion wrote: | | This looks drastically better than TFU on Wii, maybe because I have no desire for iffy force powers via waving my hand. |
As much as I love the Wii - Lightsaber Battles worries me for 2 separate reasons.
1. It looks very similar to The Force Unleashed's duel mode...
Is it entirely impossible that they simply ported over their Force Unleashed code - redid the graphics and slightly changed the move sets and then repackaged it as this?
I doubt it - but it's a fun conspiracy theory until more is revealed about Lightsaber Battles.
2. I've read up on the Wii's E3 announced Motion-Plus attachment. The concept is actually much sounder than I thought it was and it's PERFECT for sword fighting games. Since the Motion-Plus isn't due to be out until early 2009 and Lightsaber Battles comes out in 2008... it's going to feel like only half the lightsaber game we really want. It's going to be sad if/when Nintendo's fencing minigame feels far more accurate than the full fledged lightsaber game released only a few months early.
And, on the topic of The Force Unleashed Wii's controls... IGN's latest report (earlier this month) was rather promising.
| IGN wrote: | | As maybe the most important aspect of our hands-on time with the game, we're happy to report that the motion control in The Force Unleashed is extremely tight and reliable, and actually some of the best we've seen for any Wii action game. Swipes from left to right, right to left, vertical upper-cuts and slams, and even stab motions worked extremely well – nearly 100% of the time – and even dual-handed motion such as the huge force maelstrom or complicated push + lighting variations worked almost flawlessly. Force Unleashed was fun last time around, but it was a total waggle-fest. This time, we were able to actually decide exactly how to dispose of enemies, and it was extremely rewarding. It was easy to throw characters into one another, lift a baddy up into the air and then saber throw, the lock-on camera worked great for bosses, and even the "tilt to the side" block with the Wii-mote worked every time we wanted it to. Force Unleashed had potential before, but it's a blast to play now. |
This is good news for me, since I don't have any fun using either the PS3 or 360's controllers. So, with the lack of a PC version, the Wii is my only outlet
