Discussion of Lies of Bakura

Bwahaha. Hopefully I was able to mislead most people from realizing I was playing around in two eras until the word "artoo" appeared Very Happy

The little quickie illustrations may seem just for fun now, but are eventually integrated into the story... although they're mostly just for fun   Razz
Darth Acheron

Haha yeah, I thought it was Rive coming back from some sort of expedition.

I like the inclusion, strangely enough, of Luke, though I guess that means we should basically just acknowledge that after ROTJ, the EU splits off into our one where the novels still exist, but our events also happen, or something.
Rive Caedo

While if I'd been active roleplay-wise while canon was being established - I'd probably have taken that route. I think it's too late for that now though.

So, I deliberately let this not disrupt the current timeline. The "future" portion of the fanfiction occurs in 8 ABY - one year before Thrawn's campaign and our timeline diverges. So Luke is still very much alive, Coruscant has just been retaken by the Republic, and Han and Leia are about to get married.

The only changes I've made to the timeline is that Luke encountered the Bakuran Temple at the end of the Battle of Bakura in 3 ABY - and has now returned in 8 ABY for reasons that will soon be revealed.
Darth Acheron

Well, reguardless, I'm liking it quite a lot so far, and look forward to the next bits.

*Hopes Korus gets a mention*
Lord Vexen

I think all the vets from the Without Sin series will at least get a mentions.

And by I think I mean they should...
Darth Acheron

Well I've already agreed with Rive that I want Korus staying on Bakura until the next adventure so that he has time to recuperate from the adventure. Wink
Rive Caedo

Oh, rest assured, Korus will be getting a bit more than a mention - considering you've already given me permission to do certain things with him. And he's one of the character's I don't "own" that don't feel too bad about playing fast and loose with, since I helped to establish him originally in Kallibann.

I feel a bit worse about playing around with Abba and such, but I don't foresee her becoming active again in roleplays any time soon. So - the storyline takes precedence! She's an important character that deserves to have some background and personality instead of being skirted around. She'll mostly act as a foil to Rive.

The same goes for anyone else, by the way. Although this story will obviously be somewhat Rive-centric, since I "own" him, if you PM me with what your character would logically be doing during these 5 years or how they'd react to some of the events coming up in future chapters of the story, I'll do my best to integrate it.

EDIT: I just uploaded the "Signature Teaser" for chapter 2 (which I spent way too much time on due to saying "Ooo, she should have a necklace thing to match her hairband/headband!" "Ooo, she should have a Pacathium pendent set in that necklace!" "Hm... why would they be using metal bars? They should probably be energy based" etc - these are supposed to be quickie images!). If my posts are the right length (I think this one will be just about right, after this edit), it looks like she's looking up towards my Rive avatar. Totally non-deliberate, but pretty cool Smile
Jaden Nightsaber

I really like this so far.  I think the images are an awesome touch.  I like the "Y. Walker" one.  Could it be that the rest of the image would have said [Sk]ywalker?  Who knows?!

But as for Nova, I'm sure he would have stuck around only for a little bit and then went back to Nar Shaddaa to reclaim is grasp on the underworld.  So I wouldn't worry about him.
Dakoth

Quite nice Rive, I shall be reading it intently, spamming every chapter with vauge mentions of Aftershock in order to steal attention.
Lord Invictus

Very intreuging. For once, I actually feel like following a fanfic. Can't wait for chapter II. Keep 'em rollin' in!
Darth Acheron

Hmph, is that meant to imply ANOTHER person hasn't been following DE?
Lord Invictus

Xander Vos wrote:

No, it's just that that fanfic began before my time, and I was too lazy to just read it all.  Smile  Sorry. One of these days I'll read it.... ONCE I GET THE INTERNET WORKING! C'MON YOU PIECE OF JUNK!  Twisted Evil
Darth Acheron

Hmph. Razz
Dakoth

It is a fairly huge piece of literature, I procrastinated for a while before getting down to reading it, which I can say I was sorry I didn't do earlier.
Darth Acheron

Why thank you. Smile

I must admit to a certain amount of procrastination myself, but I'll hopefully get down to writing the (much shorter) sequel in the next week or so.
Rive Caedo

Due to the illustrations making each chapter take a fair bit more time than just writing, this will probably take longer than I originally planned. I originally said 2 weeks, now I'm guessing closer to 4 or 5.

But, that could be a good thing. It gives Dakoth's rolelplay some time to develop and Jewel 3 also (which I'm about to post in).

I have a rough outline now and it looks like we're going to end up with 8 chapters of about the same length of chapter 1 (maybe a smidgen longer). I'd actually sort of like to do 12ish, but I think that's too many for a "between main events" story. If A Galaxy Without Sin was our Empire Strikes Back, this is our Shadows of the Empire Smile

Actually... I suppose this would be more like Labyrinth of Evil before our Revenge of the Sith.
Darth Acheron

What's the distinction between Labyrinth and Shadows?

And when can we expect the next chapter out?
Rive Caedo

I have a bundle of things to take care of tomorrow, so I'd probably say Friday or Saturday - Sunday at the latest for Chapter Two.

Quote:
What's the distinction between Labyrinth and Shadows?

Labyrinth was released before Revenge of the Sith and was largely used as a lead-in to the movie. Like this will be a lead-in to Without Sin 3.

Shadows of the Empire was released many many years after Return of the Jedi. It was largely just another adventure. It shows a few things that set up Return of the Jedi - how Leia got her bounty hunter costume and when Luke built his new lightsaber - but it's mostly just the story of Black Sun and Xizor.

And, I'd say Labyrinth over Shadows simply because if we ever return to the Without Sin saga down the line after the final roleplay, it'd be set after these, not before - so these would become the Without Sin prequel trilogy.
Darth Acheron

Ah, I see, ok.

Well, regardless, I look forward to the next chapter. Very Happy
Rive Caedo

*sigh* Even when I have a nice free and clear evening planned - things come up. But, come Hell or high water, I'm finishing this chapter tonight! It shall be the greatest.... thing.... to....

*gets distracted by the Company of Heroes DVD he hasn't gotten a chance to play since he bought it two days ago*

No! I will resist temptation! For the good of the storyline!

*begins furiously writing*
Rive Caedo

And there we go, sorry for the delays.

I planned to have the conversation with Armia be a good deal longer than the three sentences exchanged between them. But after explaining in detail what happened after the shuttle craft's wreckage was dropped off and making as clear as I could the difference between Ysalamir and Pacathium based methods to stop Force powers as best I could without getting way too wordy AND giving a little flashback to Kallibann... I was already at almost 2 pages.

Still, I suppose it's for the best. I think it makes sense for Armia to not exactly be in a talking mood after what she's been through (though, in Rive's opinion here, she's deserved it).

Also, I'm immensely happy with how the paper cutout Luke turned out. It really does, in my opinion, look exactly like something a young student would do. And that's really my intention with these images - to make the universe feel a bit more real.
Darth Acheron

I liked it, quite interested now in what happened, though I must admit to taking a few moments to realise the significance of the 23 years. Razz Still not sure about the six year gap, though I'd assume it has to do with the Without Sin Series as a whole.
Rive Caedo

Gotcha, I've cleared it up a bit.
Jaden Nightsaber

Very nice chapter Rive.  I'm really enjoying your writing and dramatic lines delivered.  Gives it a very cinematic feeling.  I'm looking forward to the next chapter.
Lord Vexen

Looks like Luke is getting angry.
Lord Invictus

Very good. Dramatic, but in a good way. It's almost like a Star Wars movie.... but more "peace-time oriented."

The line about the Imperial database...

"However, you can imagine my surprise when I found that there was a six year gap in the data starting... 23 years ago."

Was changed to...

"But, you can imagine my surprise when I found that there was a six year gap in the data starting... 23 years ago. Spanning nearly identical dates to the gap in your database.”

And I also added the line at the very end, to emphasize what Luke's insinuating.

"Something happened in those six years. Something you don't want anyone finding out about." Luke kept his gaze fixed on the Jedi across from him, unblinking, "I want to know what."

Quote:

Yep, although there will be a bit of action in a chapter or two here.
Darth Acheron

Oh yeah I got that, I was just saying I didn't know the importance of the six year gap though I'm sure that's going to be revealed. Sorry didn't make that clear. Razz

Yeah, I'm liking this a lot, feels more Star Wars than the end few LOTF novels, that's for sure.
Lord Vexen

Well...doesn't our timeline split off from canon somewhere around here? Maybe we could have Luke killed off in our canon here.

That is of course, you haven't already planned that.
Darth Acheron

It splits off during the Thrawn Crisis, because in our's Thrawn capture Coruscant, in the real one, he doesn't.
Lord Embeion

invisible meteorites ftw
Rive Caedo

Lord Embeion wrote:

Guh?

And yes, as I think I mentioned before - the Luke portion of this story occurs one year before the Thrawn crisis.
Jaden Nightsaber

Oh Em Gee!  New sig!  It seems the ghostly figure of Alec Guiness will be making an appearance in the next chapter lecturing Luke about some, no doubt, darker aspects of the force and how to avoid them.  Quite the opposite of Palpatine's speech to Anakin in RotS.

Look forward to it.
Lord Vexen

Rive Caedo wrote:

Just cause it splits off during the Thrawn crisis...doesn't mean Luke can't be killed...maybe.
Rive Caedo

It would be logical that Luke suddenly not existing could tip the tide of the Thrawn crisis. But, Xander mentioned he wanted to do a story detailing our version of the Thrawn crisis somewhere, so I don't really want to step on his toes for that.
Darth Acheron

Rive 1 - Thrawn used cloaked meteorites to attack Coruscant I think.

Vexen - Only problem is that I wasn't planning to start my story at the start of the Thrawn trilogy - that'd cause a lotttt of transcribing on my part  - which would mean that those bits of the books still were canon in ours, which would mean Luke was still alive.

Rive 2 - However, I really don't want to step on YOUR toes either, so we could always shift it to Lies of Bakura as being the splinter, and the Thrawn Crisis just demonstrating how that splinter tore the EU's completely apart. Wink
Rive Caedo

Nearly finished with Chapter Three. Really hoping to get it out tonight. Although I am having trouble getting one of the illustrations to look like I want it to.
Lord Invictus

Um... is the fanfic dead?
Rive Caedo

Certainly not, I apologize for the delay - I hadn't realized it'd been this long.

I didn't like the first version I wrote of Chapter 3, so I rewrote it basically from the ground up. I liked that version better, but it still didn't feel right.

Then I decided that - although I've been trying to have each section have a "Future" section set in 8 ABY and a "Present" section set after Venom of the Empire - Chapter 3 worked much better as being purely Luke.

So basically now I need to write the portion of Luke's story that would have been in Chapter 4 and tack it on to the section I've already written for Chapter 3.

I'll try my absolute best to do that tomorrow. There may only be one illustration, since it only focuses on one piece of the timeline, but maybe I'll whip up another one too.

I've already made the signature preview for Chapter 4, since I'm rather excited about that chapter  Very Happy
Lord Invictus

M'kay. Sorry if I rushed you.
Jaden Nightsaber

Would it be possible to get some more of this up sooner rather than later?
Rive Caedo

Ugh, I know. Every time I log in and see my signature I think "Gyah! It's been over a month!"

And the real trouble is that Chapter 3 is only semi-interesting, Chapter 4 is the one I'm really looking forward to. So after all this build up all you're going to get is a rather slow paced Luke chapter, heh.

I've said this twice before, but I'll try my best to finalize/publish Chapter 3 tonight.
Darth Acheron

I think the site's going through a creative block, no RPs have progressed in ages, and neither of our stories have progressed.
Lord Invictus

Xander Vos wrote:

I hate creative blocks. I haven't written any of my book for ages, and I've almost stopped rping. But, with Assault on Coruscant, and the last without sin, that'll stop.
Rive Caedo

Not sure if I'll have Chapter 3 up tonight, but here is a little something interesting. I whipped this up for myself, but I suppose it could be nice for you to see too. It's the basic layout for the Bakuran Temple I've been using. Chapter 3 onwards starts to use a ton of locations in the Bakuran Temple and moves through them rather rapidly, so it's probably a good idea for you to have a basic visual layout Smile

Obviously, my version of the Temple could conflict with earlier accounts. But it'd be impossible to reconcile the differences of every version of the Temple people have created on-the-fly for roleplays and usually the Temple's layout is written in very general and vague terms anyway. But, in any case, this is what the Temple looks like for Without Sin's purposes.

Armia is being kept in that room furthest to the north. It's likely the oldest part of the Temple.

The central grounds were built long before the North Wing, but they've been renovated and rebuilt several times, which is why the North Wing is older. Most training rooms and classrooms are located in the central grounds, but there are also some in the wings.

The North Wing (besides Armia's cell) contains the West and East dormitories. The dormitories are nearly identically built. The West Dormitory is generally used for younger students and the Eastern Dormitory is generally used for older students (Knights and above). A large hub connects the two dormitories directly. Among other things, the North Hub contains dueling chambers.

The East Wing contains mostly utilitarian concerns. The medical facilities, storage compartments, and docking bays are located here. Landing pads are located to the north and south of the East Wing building.

The South Wing is more of an extension to the central grounds than an actual wing. Among other things, the South Wing contains the Grand Hall, meeting rooms, the archives, and the Council Chambers.

The West Wing contains only the Western Atrium (which has already been seen twice) in the "present" time period, but by 8 ABY (Luke's time period) it's fully connected to the central grounds, contains additional training grounds, and additional docking pads.
Also to the west is the lake (which I don't think has a name yet) and a large hill/cave (the weird 3D gradient sphere thing) that will be featured in Chapter 3.

The area south of the temple probably has a forest (less densely packed than the area around the Temple's clearing) or it could have something more interesting, I don't know Very Happy
Rive Caedo

And there we go. Hopefully I'm over the hump now. Like I said (and as you can tell from my new signature preview), Chapter 4 is where it really heats up.

Also: I'm thinking of doing a little miniature roleplay set in the Without Sin series, since Lies of Bakura is taking much longer to write than I thought it would.

It'd open up at the same time I post Chapter 5 of Lies of Bakura and would basically just be a "side quest" to the main storyline tying up a few loose ends from Kallibann. Whereas the "main" roleplays have run for about 15 pages of posts, this would probably only run 3-5.

Would anyone be interested in that?
Lord Invictus

Ooh, exciting last chapter! Can't wait for the next one!

The roleplaying idea sounds interesting (dang, I wasn' in Kallibann. Could I not have joined 2 months earlier?!), and, if it came out, I'd join.
Rive Caedo

Lord Mortalis wrote:
(dang, I wasn' in Kallibann. Could I not have joined 2 months earlier?!)

Well, you could. But you'll need a modified DeLorean DMC-12 and a few canisters of plutonium Wink

Full knowledge of Kallibann wouldn't be required. I'll probably write up a new summary of the ending of Kallibann, since the summary I wrote for Venom of the Empire skips over big portions of the story - since they weren't relevant for VotE.
But, if you're feeling especially ambitious, the relevent portions of Kallibann for the "side quest" take place on pages 8-16. So I'd read those if you want maximum enjoyment.

Oh and since I usually do little behind-the-scenes notes for each chapter/big post...

I thought it was a ah... cute? idea that Luke gets a toolbox out for Obi-Wan to sit down on. I remember someone (an expanded universe author - I think) talking about how odd they thought it was that spirit Obi-Wan sits down a log in Return of the Jedi. So here's Luke deliberately catering to spirit Obi-Wan's strange ability to get tired and want to sit down, despite being - you know - dead Smile

Quote:
"You’ll be rounding up criminals and chasing ghosts for the rest of your life if you try to right every wrong committed during your father and the Emperor’s reign.”

Luke shook his head, “This is different. These aren’t low brow thugs or stormtroopers; these are Jedi."

^^^ Probably my favorite exchange in this chapter. Feels a lot like their "real" conversations to me.

The archway image is the laziest image I've done for this so far. I just took a photograph of an archway - ran it through a few GIMP filters to make it look like a charcoal painting and then added the aurabesh lettering. Despite that, I think it looks pretty good Smile

Well, okay, the R2-D2 image is even less work. But I wouldn't even really call that an image. It's just cool text. It still annoyed me a bit since I had redo it after I finished adding the effects and realized I'd misspelled "teraquad" as "terraquad".
I don't think Star Wars has ever quantified its data values, so I borrowed Star Trek's "quads" (megaquad, kiloquad, gigaquad - etc).

And yes, that is intended to be a young Xander Vos cameo at the end.
Lord Invictus

Rive Caedo wrote:

XANDER!!!! He's everywhere, popping up in all my conspiracy theories!

But yes, that was quite interesting. I didn't suspect a Xander... I suspected some Jedi that'd become important in a later roleplay, but never a XANDER!

Dude, Rive, your fanfiction stories are the best. no joke, kashmir is perfect with them. i highly suggest reading one chapter per kashmir repeat.

The vampiric?  Oh...sounds interesting.  Anything to do with one of my characters, Kriss Sabin?  Probably not but still interesting.  I picked up on Xander Vos right away, nice cameo to keep setting in our minds.  Very well written dialog too, feels real.
Darth Acheron

Haha yeah I was going to ask, I thought it was Xander too straight away. Tatooinians seem drawn to each other. Razz

Very well written, I'm loving the feel of it. Only, none of the pictures loaded for me except the last one.

I'm almost positive the "Vampiric" is a reference to Trask, who pranced around for a couple billion years terrorizing the Bakuran order with much sucess.

But in other news, I'm very mad at Rive!  I come back expecting two delicious chapters for my reading pleasure, only to be greeted with one chapter with the deliciousness of two.  I requrie the next installment posthaste sir.

I've been playing around with the storyline for the past few weeks. I think I've got it just about where I want it. So expect Chapter Four soon™

Nice trade mark...I hope you actually mean soon this time.
Lord Invictus

Thou shalt not doubt the Rive, Vexen....
Rive Caedo

"Soon" in this case, meant less than a month - not too shabby Wink

I'm not sure if I'll add the second half of Chapter Four onto the current Chapter Four or just call it Chapter Five. Four is already fairly long.

I thought it was sort of an interesting idea to give Narix this sort of sad - but still rather dignified send off. We don't really know Narix, since - as far as I know - no one has really written about him besides me (beyond "Grand Master Guy Before Abba").

Saying goodbye to characters you never got a chance to know. I'm not sure if it worked the way I wanted to - but at least it's something I haven't really seen done before.

I rather like how "Maiden Flight" came out. Here's the full size version of it if you're interested - before I shrunk it down and tore the corners for the story version.

Jaden Nightsaber

I particularly enjoyed this chapter.  It gave a lot of characterization to Rive and Korus.  And I loved the part with Narix.  I felt kinda bad for him.  And I loved the ending how it turned into 1337.  I'd like to know more about that

I liked the story, but I'm confused about the significance of this. Please explain....?
Rive Caedo

The scrambled text is simply indicating that the chapter you're reading has cut out. The files are corrupted and you're not able to read that section of the story.

The real reason why it does that is because that's where "Retribution of the Chosen" takes place and I can't know exactly how that will play out since we haven't even started it! Heheh. If you click the "Files Corrupted: Attempt Recovery?" image it will take you to the Retribution of the Chosen thread. I figured it was sort of lame to say ((This is where Retribution of the Chosen takes place)), so I made an in-character reason for the story cutting out there.

So the idea is that as we're roleplaying out RotC, you're "decrypting" the missing piece of the story.
Lord Invictus

Oh....  Embarassed

Now that I get it (I feel like a moron) but it's ABSOLUTELY AWESOME....
Dakoth

A clever ploy by Rive to delay the arrival of future chapters, methinks.  But I like this clever ploy.
Darth Samuel

Don't wanna be mean or anything, but can you hurry up with the next chapter!!!!!!! Razz
Darth Acheron

ME WANT MORE!
Rive Caedo

I have 3 pages finished, which would normally mean it was basically finished (I think we've been averaging 4 so far). But I think this one will end up being at least 6. There's a lot going on since it's sort of a pivotal moment. Interestingly, it's not the pivotal moment for Without Sin itself - but it is the trigger and deserves to be done right.

So again, I apologize for ongoing delays, but assure you that I am working on it whenever I get a spare moment to sit down and think creatively (okay, that's not quite true - since I'm still making time for Heroes and Clone Wars  Laughing ).

Hopefully it'll be worth the wait. I'm very excited about Chapters 5-7. Chapter 8 will probably be the final chapter and will mostly be direct set up for Without Sin 3 (which I already have a title for).

There will also be a "bonus chapter" of sorts that will be posted in my old The Journal of Rive Caedo thread - it relates directly to an event that occurs during Chapter 6, but is entirely focused on Rive and his past - so it doesn't really belong in Lies of Bakura itself.

What I'm really trying to say is I have things pretty firmly planned out - I know what I want to say... I just need the time to do it (creative writing unfortunately takes me exponentially longer than posts like this) Razz

I'll make a solid effort to have Chapter 5 up by Wednesday night - although Retribution of the Chosen might still be frozen for another day or two after that.
Rive Caedo

Hehe, now I'm just having too much fun.

On top of the 1-3 illustrations, I'm including an audio file to make this chapter a bit more immersive.

I don't advise listening to it if you hate spoilers, but here's the audio file a day or two early. I very much doubt there's enough information for you to understand how it fits into the storyline - at least not until Chapter 5/6 are published. But it does offer enough information for you to go "wha?" Razz

Anyway, spoilers for the end of Chapter 5 (Luke portion).

Sam sounds much less human: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLxP3V4veJk

This is Apple Alex - a new voice added in Mac OS X 10.5 that has lots of neat stuff (like changing its inflection based on the rest of the sentence's context and taking breaths between sentences) - with a slight echo and distortion added to make it sound mechanical (but it still sounds much more natural than Sam). Basically a next-generation text-to-speech voice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FxPHI6yZ_k&feature=relatedkcd.com/

Lies of Bakura
Chapter 5

Sunset, Bakuran Temple Council Chambers

“... and he shall be remembered always as our great watchman - and our friend.”

Narix’s funeral was drawing to a close. Well, not quite a funeral. Narix had slipped into a deep coma and was expected to die and fade away into the Force at any moment.

Elris Drome was the Council member closing the ceremony. She was the longest serving member of the Council following Narix and was expected to take his place as Grand Master. Although her 62 years of service seemed a small time when compared to Narix’s nearly 980 years on the Council - almost 950 of those as Grand Master. After it had become apparent that she would replace him, she had often teased Narix that she was planning to outdo his record.

Herself and the other dozen members of the Council surrounded the Grand Master’s frail, slipping body; his breathing was so slow and so shallow that it was almost imperceptible. Only the steady ebb of his presence in the Force indicated he was still with them at all.

Elris’ son, Jaek Drome, now nearly as respected as his mother after serving on the Council for 45 years followed upon his mother’s comments: “It is hard to imagine seeing this room full without him... or to see the field without him watching over it.”

The council chamber sat at the southern side of the Bakuran Temple. It was nearly 15 meters in height and half as wide. It was built into a semi-circle and its exterior walls were built of a thick glass-metal composite divided into thirteen segments. This allowed it to be lit by natural lighting the entire day and for it to keep observance of half of the clearing that surrounded the temple. This usually kept the younglings using that area of the grassy field in line - knowing a council member could be watching them.

Jaek continued, “And it seems unfitting that we are given a chance to say goodbye when so many in Narix’s long life will not. It seems unfitt---”

The Jedi cut his speech short when a low, deep tremor in the Force washed over the rapidly darkening room as the sun set.

I still haven't read either Lie of Bakura or any of the Without Sin stories. I did read Destiny Eclipse however. Time well spent.

Many thanks. Smile
Sirak Sazen

You're very welcome. I actually suck at writing but I love doing it.
Sirak Sazen

I read Lie of Bakura. Very good actually. I want the next chapter!
Darth Samuel

We all do but Rive is too old to post it.

Why can I feel it when none of them can?

Perhaps I've truly gone mad... from too many months spent in the dark and so little hope of escape. So little hope of continuing on...

And that boy.

It's as if the future itself is reaching out to me: penetrating the veil the Jedi have set about me through its raw power.

No. My sanity is intact. Something is indeed very wrong in The Force.

That name sounds familiar. Confused

Are you pretending to be Rive? If you are Rive, I will believe that you are Rive unless you post on Rive's account. I don't think that you are Rive though.

Not that this isn't kind of a cool come back if you are Rive, it just doesn't seem like you.

I could check Rive's post in the Sith Section and see if anything comes up on other users. But I doubt it is. Rive was 100& completely against double accounts.

Was in that one's post. So, who's album was it?

And look at the image anyway.
Darth Acheron

Delvron, please don't post in someone else's Fanfiction topic pretending to be them. You stole his name, leave it at that.  Rolling Eyes   Wink
Crozeus

Do you know something???
Lord Embeion

People listen! This is not Rive. Stop getting so excited
