I know the idea was initially shrugged off because people would get too fiery - but I think now that the forum has clearly shifted from Role Playing primarily and General Discussion secondary to the reverse, I think this idea should have serious consideration once more.

With the forum's activity waning week by week, this forum could potentially bounce it back up purely because of one thing that will never change: we all have opinions on everything. Sure we have some threads at the moment for current affairs (and some even attempted fiery topics a while back if I recall) but no set out debates.

Heck we could even make an activity of it, have a weekly professional debate, two teams of three, debating on a set topic, with someone such as Rive - who always has a level head Razz

- being the adjudicator.

Now, there's always the customary risk of flaming, which would require moderation - heck, the moderators don't have much on their plate as it is, it wouldn't be an issue - and I just think its an interesting idea for a forum, that should at least be thought over before dismissed once more.

And yes, like Sideshow Bob pointing out the irony of spelling TV's demise on TV, I too realise the irony in prompting a debate over whether we should allow debates in an official sense. Razz

Though I do not contribute to this forum as often as I would like, I thought I would say that this idea was used on a site I was once on and the it was the most active part of forum. People love to give their own opinion, and when someone challenges that, they can't help but debate back. I think it would be a very good addition to this site with the active members you have.

Ah, I remember you wanting this 1-2 years ago Xander. I'm all for it, debates are fun. Besides, what are moderators for if not handling hot topics? I like our members here now, and think they could definetly stay under control with a "friendly" debate.

I think I'm going to give basically the same answer I did months ago:

Go for it. Keep it in the Other section for now and if, for some reason, it explodes into having 6+ active debates at a time, we might open up a subforum or full section.

I think the problem with the Other section, as we've found, is that they quickly get forgotten or ignored by people, as they slowly forget about the debate. If they were in their own forum, people could always check it and wouldn't forget about them, and there'd be no risk of losing them if a whole lot of new threads are created.

Fine. We'll give it a shot. If it's not actively being used in a month or two, the threads will be moved back into "Other".

Or rather, it was "Other". I've renamed it to "General Discussion" and moved it to the Essentials section - which is something I've been meaning to do for awhile now. The old general discussion thread has been renamed "Chat Thread"
