Clone Wars Television Series General Discussion

I'm sure we'll probably have a thread every week for each new episode, but I figured an overarching thread separate from the movie thread was in order as well.

Anyway: First series trailer released today!

It feels sort of odd to have something coming on TV that actually looks properly Star Warsy. Our previous experiences on that venue (Holiday Special, Droids, EWOKS) have not been overly pleasant.

This doesn't really tell us much we didn't already know. We already knew that the real voice of General Grievous (Matthew Wood) was playing the role. But we did NOT know for sure that Christopher Lee would continue playing Dooku after the movie. AWESOME!

They show the Twlight (the B-Wing looking freighter) from the Clone Wars movie. But it looked like it may have just been footage from the movie. But I wouldn't be disappointed if they kept it around. It was a neat looking ship.

We also get our first earful of Plo Koon's voice. I mentioned in the other thread that the thing we'd heard about the series that most excited me was "An entire episode starring Plo Koon" and that I hoped they didn't mess that up. I actually rather like the voice they've given him myself! Very dignified.

Still not as exciting as the prospects of the 2010 live action series in unknown territory, but this will do for now  Wink

my favorite part of the trailer, the droid going,"That was Impressive" and greivous pushes him down. Laughing

Really?! KIT FISTO FTW!~~!!!!!!11111@!
Rive Caedo

I just watched it again via YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwtOs_IEMSI so I could skip around the scenes.

I'll be interested to see what direction they go with Grievous. We don't hear him cough in the trailer (which would match up with the original 2D Clone Wars series where he doesn't gain his cough until literally moments before Episode III begins), but the one lightsaber swing we see him make looks to be closer to his Episode III style... but we also see the Mon Calamari Jedi say "You can't defeat us all!" ("Of course I can!") which seems to indicate Grievous is about to unleash some of his 2D Clone Wars level powers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXQx_QLY8XM&feature=related .

Wow. It's been too long since I've watched the 2D series. I'd forgotten about Jedi Shaggy Razz
Matthew Wood's Grievous voice is way better than the one they used in the 2D cartoons - thankfully.
Lord Invictus

A cooler scene would be=

"You can't beat us all!"

Grievous maniacally laughs as he beats them all...
Darth Samuel

Eh, I like the idea of Plo Koon and Kit Fisto each having their own episode. Kit Fisto's episode of the 2d series was awesome.(Taking down a whole army practically by himself.) I hope the Plo Koon one has his piloting skills, which it should. Very Happy

I will be oh, so mad if "Snipps" doesn't die by the end of the series.

Agreed except I did watcht he movie pilot.

I sort of doubt it - they're still going for a PG rating it looks like, despite the 9PM time slot.

They might go for an ambiguous death like Dash Rendar had in Shadows of the Empire.
Darth Carnage

Sadly, I know. It is the main thing that I already KNOW I will dislike about the series, the fact that Anakin has an apprentice. I mean, it won't matter how much I get into the series, the moment she walks into frame, I will mad the rest of the episode.
Rive Caedo

Well at least you'll be happy for most of the first episode then - since supposedly it only has Yoda and clones for the good guys.

Although...

Spoiler:

It's also going to feature the "Toydarian King" who gives me the feeling he'll be an annoying character.

Darth Carnage

All Toydarian and Gungans are.

But I will be oh, so happy for the first episode. Though I can already say that the live-action series will be soooo much better.

You say that now, but you'll change your tune when George Lucas comes on stage at Celebration V and says:

"Well hello there. I am... um... very pleased to show you the first... ah... trailer for the Star Wars Live Action Television series."

*Audience cheers*

"I know you've all been... er... very excited about this since I... uh... announced it at Celebration 2, er... 4. So here we ah... er... go. The first footage for the series that will show us all the crazy adventures one of my personal favorite characters got into during the rise of the um... Empire."

What he said

and Kevin brought up a good point. Asajj Ventress s probably gonna keellll her off. PG rating doesn't matter, Clones still died in the movie. Don't forget the Bounty Hunter heads being given to Jabba.

Lord Embeion wrote:

Ha! I had forgotten that moment of the movie.

Still, it would surprise me if they did it. Killing off Clone Trooper #83482912 is a bit different than killing off the plucky young "girls can be Jedi too!" character that kids watching have placed themselves into the role of for at least 40 episodes.

If she does die, I'd expect what they'd actually do is have her kill Ventress in a fit of rage, fall to the dark side, become Dooku's new apprentice, and then have Dooku kill her after she shows "weakness" by sparing Anakin's life in a climactic final battle. Anakin will then try to kill Dooku and fail - like in Episode II, preserving the continuity of the "my powers have doubled since we last met" line in Episode III.
Darth Carnage

Rive, are you really a script writer for Lucasfilms and not telling us?

lololol. This entire series is a slap in the face to canon.
Rive Caedo

There's nothing to say Ventress didn't come back (in fact, according to Wookieepedia there was already a book or something where her ship shows up about a month after she disappeared.

But, you could still have the scenario play out similarly even without Ventress actually dying.

Episode 47:
Anakin: "Ashoka. Stay back! You're not skilled enough to defeat Ventress. Run!"
Ashoka: "Stop holding me back, I can handle this!"
Anakin: "I told you to run Snipps!"
*Ashoka runs*

Episode 48:
Dooku: "I observed your last battle. It seems Skywalker's young disciple is growing... discontented. We may be able use this to our advantage."
Ventress: "What must I do?"

Episode 49:
*Ventress engages Ashoka in a duel. Eventually Ventress allows Ashoka to pin her.*
Dooku: "Very impressive, young Jedi. Your prowess with a blade has obviously far exceeded your master's. It was inevitable for one of your talent."
*Conversation continues - Dooku baiting her with promises of power*
Dooku: "Let that whelp *points to the defeated Ventress* crawl away in shame. She is no longer worthy. You, however, show great promise."

Episode 50:
Ashoka accompanies Dooku on a mission for the Separatists. They encounter Anakin.
Dooku: "Skywalker, I'm certain you don't want your former student to be harmed. Back down."
Anakin: "Former?"
Ashoka: "I was tired of being stopped, told I couldn't do things."
Anakin: "Ashoka, I was only trying to prot--"
Dooku: "Enough!"

*Dooku engages Anakin. After he falters he calls for Ashoka's help. She's hesitant, but eventually joins him.*

Ashoka: X_X
Dooku: "Mwahahahaha!"
Ashoka: X_X
Anakin: "Nooooooooo!"
Ashoka: X_X

Dooku: "It's unfortunate she was too weak to make the final blow against Skywalker."
Ventress: "You believe she would have been a willing ally to us? After you deceived her?"
Dooku: "No, of course not. We would have needed to eliminate her afterwards regardless - but at least we would have been rid of both of them."

They won't even let Seth Green say if he's playing a green tentacled alien that had 50 seconds of screen time in the movies. Do you think they'd let me say I was plotting Ahsoka's death? Wink

Heh, yeah I always said if I got made a Star Wars writer, I'd start some Jeid Council scene with one of the Council Members saying:

"I'm not sure who the Phantoms are, but they don't seem to pose us any threat at the moment," said Kyle, finishing his report.

Luke nodded, "What about the situation on Mon Calamari?" or whatever

Rive Caedo

A slew of new high-quality preview images for the series!

Here's probably the most interesting one. Since we didn't see the location in the Clone Wars movie or the television trailer.

Plo Koon! Whose voice I like more each time I hear it. Someone said they were hoping to see him show off his piloting skills (Jaden?) so it looks like you'll get your chance.

Confirmation that the Twilight from the Clone Wars film (or at least a vessel of the same type) will be returning.

"We're looking for John Connor. Have you seen him?"

Our old friend Ben... er... Obi-Wan. I bet he'll get a lot of his own plot lines separate from Anakin and Ahsoka.

Grievous. I'm still sooo happy they got Matthew Wood to keep doing his voice - it's awesome. But unfortunately - even though they've only made minor alterations to his design - they've switched Grievous from looking perpetually angry and a bit menacing to having a more C-3POish neutral face. I'm not sure if that was purposeful or accidental, but it's a bad move either way in my opinion.

Ventress challenges Ashoka to a duel with the intent of turning her to the dark side. Er... wait - that was only in my mind Razz

And lastly, another interesting one since it's rather directly comparable to the 2D series.

Lord Vexen

Rive Caedo wrote:

That picture of that Clone Trooper sold me to watching the series. I don't know what it is, but I loved it.

Another batch of fresh screenshots.

They look to have made Yoda's ears semi-transparent like they did in Episode III (and the puppet had in V and VI), neat. That's a subtle thing they could have skipped.

Everything can use more lensflares

Look, it's the ending of Episode II but with lower-polygon count! Razz

I bet we'll be seeing shots like this A LOT.

Rodians!

Bubble dome city. Toydaria?

I suppose they can make Grievous look sort of intimidating.

(Insert "it's a trap!" joke here)

How'd this picture of Seth Green get in here?

Eyes are soooo important to animation. And I think they've done a good job with them.

Mustafar? Ore refinery? You decide.

Hm, it looks like they could be going with a THIRD grievous fighting style. Rather than the "walk towards you with blades spinning" of Episode III or the "I can take on 7 Jedi at once" wild style of the 2D series, it looks like they may be going with a slower "droid-like precision" style. Although, it's hard to tell from one screenshot - heheh.

"Let's practice our Order 66 poses while she's not looking!"

Rive Caedo

Talen D'aar wrote:

I didn't notice that - if it's there. I have a possible explanation.

Possible spoilers for Episodes 1-6 of Clone Wars
Spoiler:

The Mon Calamari Jedi is Fisto's apprentice. It's possible he dies (or is knocked unconscious) and Fisto uses his lightsaber temporarily.

Talen D'aar

Well, I think it may be in a different episode than the parts we see the Mon Calamari fighting Grievous. The MC fights him in a dark area, and when Kit's using two lightsabers he's in a light blue area. If you go to 1:54 of the first trailer you put in the thread, you catch a glimpse of it. It's quick, but it's there.

EDIT: The youtube version's better for checking it out.
Rive Caedo

Only a week and a day to go! New updates!

IGN put up a 1 minute clip from the first episode (remember, they're airing TWO episodes the premiere night). (Alternative YouTube link - faster, but a bit lower quality and may be taken down)

Also: TOMORROW NIGHT (Friday) at 8pm (Eastern US Time Zone, I assume) Cartoon Network is airing a preview special for the series hosted by the girl voicing Ahsoka Tano. Likely just behind the scenes stuff and reintroducing the characters. I wonder how many times they'll manage to call Tano "spunky" during the special  Razz

I missed the Clone Wars preview, but luckily some kind hearted soul has uploaded it to the interwebs. It's 20 minutes long.

Anakin

I'm still kind of hazy on why Anakin has a padawan. They just came with that out of nowhere...when we see in ROTS that Anakin is still a Jedi Knight yet hes a "master" in this.
Rive Caedo

No, he's still a knight. Remember the end of Episode I? Obi-Wan had just been promoted to Knight and then he was allowed to take Anakin as an apprentice. You can have a master/apprentice relationship without holding the Master rank.
Anakin

Yeah but its like

Master Obi-Wan Kenobi

is training Anakin Skywalker

who is training a padawan?

Now you can say that the apprenticeship between the two break when Anakin becomes a knight but that doesen't seem right.
Rive Caedo

The previous 2D Clone Wars series (before Ahsoka was even planned) actually said exactly that.

Obi-Wan: Anakin, you're late.

Anakin: I know.

Obi-Wan: When the council requests your presence, it's always of great importance.

Anakin: If I'm late for another scolding does it really matter?

Obi-Wan: Scolding? You're not a little boy anymore. But as long as you are my student you will heed my wisdom.

Anakin: You're right. I'm not a little boy. And as far as your wisdom goes, you're no Qui-Gon Jinn!

Obi-Wan: *shocked*

Anakin:  ...Master, forgive me, I didn't mean...

Obi-Wan: I know. I miss him too. Not a day goes by when I don't look to his wisdom for guidance. I've done my best to pass his teaching to you. And in our time together you have proven to me that you are capable of all he believed you would be. And now we must leave our roles as master and student. It is time we became brothers.

(Scene Cut)

Yoda: Step forward, Padawan. Anakin Skywalker, by the right of the Council, by the will of the Force, dub thee, I do, Jedi; Knight of the Republic.
Anakin

Hmm, alright ya got me. Still not to jolly about it though. In ROTS Obi-Wan still seems to have that masterish (not a word) feeling over a Anakin. BUT I do admit, Lucas even said in a commentary that the two were like brothers now, not master and apprentice and the best of friends.

It just seems like since Obi-Wan was a Jedi Master he would still have Anakin under his wing.
Rive Caedo

I'm not ecstatic about it either, but they might be able to do some interesting things with it.

One example I can think of off the top of my head is Obi-Wan taking a new temporary aprentice during a few episodes of the series and Anakin getting a bit jealous and then using Ahsoka to "compete" with Obi-Wan's apprentice (and, of course, then having it blow up in his face and teaching the kiddies watching that being competitive for the sake of competition is a bad thing).
Anakin

If that does happen, then you must be on the project.

A quick Google search indicates that they aired the old 2D series simultaneously with the USA airings. And you got the movie earlier than everyone else. So I'd assume they will be airing it.

Of course, as Vexen said, it's not difficult to find alternative methods these days.
Xander Vos

That's true.

So when is it scheduled to start?
Rive Caedo

Less than a week from now. October 3rd (9pm East Coast time - in the United States)

And, just as another reminder: Two episodes on the premiere night. So don't flip the channel after the Yoda/Asaaj Ventress episode finishes because they're also showing an Anakin/Ahsoka episode featuring Plo Koon and General Grievous!
Xander Vos

Ok, so in like three or four days for me. Hopefully they run simultaneously again!
Rive Caedo

Another brief preview clip had been aired. This time its Kenobi fighting Grievous on a hover train thing. A little under a minute long.

Please, I know tons of people old and young who admit to watching Cartoon Network, considering it has Adult Swim on it. :-\ I didn't realize teenagers have become that crazy regarding social lives. You RP on the internet, watching Cartoon network and watching star wars should be the least of your worries.
Rive Caedo

It's just a pity that the only good original programming (in my opinion) on Adult Swim is Venture Brothers. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was good too but that's over now. The rest of their stuff is just poorly animated stoner humor. Shin Chan is fun too, but I'm not sure if I'd count it as original - even if the humor is mostly original due to extremely liberal translation.

Also regarding Cartoon Network: They also just cancelled Toonami apparently. Which is a shame because that was a precursor to Adult Swim in that they aired uncut Anime on "Toonami: Midnight Run" for awhile. That was where I caught Tenchi Muyo - which was a delightfully over the top anime series with a bunch of Star Wars parallels.

Tenchi would fit right into Clone Wars Razz

Just a few days left and we've got a new commercial preview (Plo Koon!) and what appears to be a leaked press package or DVD feature. Contains a mix of old and new clips at the beginning, then 3 interviews, then some entirely new clips from episodes 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Boondocks rules like none other. A Pimp named Slickback is the best. Laughing

I can't wait for this series.

As you were saying Rive about Adult Swim I think they just kind of killed it. Now they have stupid tongue-in-cheek shows. Most of them, I can't even stand for a couple of minutes and they even aired PeeWee Herman. o_o
Lord Vexen

Adult Swim used to have some good shows...my favorite was Detective Conan I think it was called. Best show ever.

Wow. I'd forgotten about that one. They actually called it Case Closed here. The solutions to a lot of those mysteries were actually pretty intricate but didn't usually depend on revealing things as evidence for the solution that you - as the viewer - couldn't have caught yourself while watching (although a few did, as I recall).

It's a shame they cancelled the English dub after the 50th episode. There's over 500 episodes in Japan plus over a dozen movies and it's still going.

"Dad was blind!"

What I don't like is all these fights with Grievous. He's meant to be this mysterious Jedi killer. Added to that, he's implied to have never met Skywalker before ROTS. (Paraphrased) "Ah, Skywalker, I expected someone of your stature to be a little.... older."
Rive Caedo

Xander, Xander, Xander. You're simply not thinking with a Lucasarts mentality.

"That doesn't make sense!"
"Oh... you're right. Well uh... it's obvious that Grievous underwent a uh... memory wipe!"
"He's not all droid!"
"Partial memory wipe!"
"... Frak."

But actually...

Have we seen a clip of Anakin fighting Grevious yet?
I know we've seen Kenobi (train + hyperdrive core)
Ahsoka (hallways of a ship)
Kit Fisto (Lair)
Mon Calamari Jedi (Lair)
and we've seen Dooku tell Grevious that Skywalker is leading the mission to attack his fleet - but it doesn't sound like they'll actually meet face to face.

I'm sure it'll be rather inevitable over the course of 40-100+ episodes. But I don't think they've messed it up yet.
Xander Vos

But besides the domination by Kenobi in ROTS, I liked the fact that Grievous actually WAS a Jedi Killer, and everyone he went up against got killed in an instant. Now, Ashoka is seen fighting him, and she OBVIOUSLY survives.  Rolling Eyes

I kinda have the same questioning with Asajj Ventress. Before the Clone Wars show and movie, a duel with Ventress was something rare and exciting because well---its one of the few Jedi enemies that wields lightsabers--but now, its trivial. I see Asajj fighting like every Jedi now in this show when really, she wasen't that active. According to the EU books she was more secretive. And when she dueled with a Jedi, it had more momentum. Now I'm null on each time she fights.

Weekly updates:

New episode tomorrow - basically a direct continuation to the second episode last week. The 5-page background comic for the episode is online now. Personally, I find this idea rather neat - basically giving you some extra context that other people might miss out on. "Procedure" is the new one for this week. [Link]

The premiere received the highest ratings for any program in Cartoon Network's history. Leaving little doubt we'll get at least the minimum 4 seasons promised and perhaps giving hope to future CG series set in different eras.

Lastly, the series is now available for sale on iTunes. They're being sold in DVD quality (852x480) for $2 per episode. This is somewhat unusual since most other TV shows on iTunes are sold at about half that quality. Even so, I'll wait for the actual DVD release since it'll almost doubtlessly be either cheaper than the cost for the full iTunes season ($40) or at least equal... and the DVD will have special features and a pretty case.

Does anyone know where i can catch these episodes online?
Rive Caedo

Ah, you can now get them online for free!

Tonight's episode is a continuation of the superweapon isn't it? I hated that one. Confused Well, not hated, but liked a lot less than the yoda one.

News: The new episodes are still being aired at 9, but they're also going to be showing the previous week's episode at 8:30 - so if you missed Rising Malevolence (Episode 2) last week, tune in a bit early.

Yes, the next two episodes continue that story. I say yay for more Plo Koon Smile

Actually, they said on TV that the next episode is the last in a 3-part storyline.

Also, I'm anxiously awaiting the episode where Quinlan Vos makes his debut. I mean, it's bound to pop up right?
Rive Caedo

Huh, I hadn't considered Vos showing up. I wonder what voice they'll give him if/when he does.

And next week is the last episode in the 3-part "Malevolence" storyline. When I made my post tonight's episode hadn't been aired yet.

I AM liking that each episode is its own complete story even when it's part of a larger arc. There's no "Oh no! Grevious is about to fire his ion cannon! What will happen?! Tune in next week to find out!" which is common in shows like this.
Anakin

Ah, Vos, he would be a great character to bring up in the show. And since its a tv show they can expand on so many characters.
Rive Caedo

I had to go and find a clip of what they could be doing if this was a more standard kid's action show. I think the little Jedish text at the beginning of the episode is a good compromise Very Happy

Also:  Shocked

I just saw a post on another forum with someone who realized something rather interesting. The Twilight (the B-Wingish looking ship that Anakin and Ahsoka fly around in) is established as a spice freighter in The Clone Wars movie.

Uncle Owen told Luke that his father was a navigator on a spice freighter.

I hope it's deliberate - and that they'll actually show Owen interact with Anakin again later. They could clear up one of the more annoying plot holes ("He didn't hold with your father's ideals; he felt he should've stayed here and not gotten involved.") AND make it rather cool that Owen actually told Luke the truth about his father... from a certain point of view Smile

Heh when I first saw this I must admit to thinking you meant me.  Sad
Anakin

Well since Xander is part of the Vos family I'm sure Rive can pull some strings and bring in him the show because we all know who Mr.Rive works for.  Razz
