Okay, try taking out the ball and then cleaning the inside...you can get a much stable and smoother cut if you do that cause the gunk inside while often cause the mouse to kinda not be able to roll so much

Ok I have GIMP also. I pretty fimiliar with its interface. Now when your cutting an image its best to use Erase really cuz you can get it how you want. When you get in close use the faded erase icon.(Under the regular ones) it gives the best look.

Its also best to use the Pick Colors tool to get the color of your text and what not. When you have the picute up if you go to Dialogs and up to Layers that allows you to change things around and put them infront or back of something, it also lets you make them see-through if you look at opacity.

Thats all you really need to know(if you dont already know it) until you start getting more advanced.

oh and another thing instead of looking really close scale hte image to double size so its a even finer cut when you scale it back down. It will save your images life,lol
