A friend and I have been penning the frame for a couple of books we hope to write. He recently joined the forum as 'Three Dog'. Him and I need help for a title.

Here is the basic plot for the first:

Russia has developed advanced stem cell research technology and is nearing human cloning. This stirs up some controversy.

A fictional post-soviet era break-away nation has been discovered to have copious amount of an element key in the stem cell and cloning process. Russia's near-communist leader approves an invasion. Russia moves in.

In America, a Democrat is in office and lends his support to the Russia-invaded nation's militia. He does this to gain support against Russia's leader and appear heroic to the UN. As soon as American troops reach the nation, Russian troops retreat, in fear of a third world war.

Even so, the American president issues a Black Ops team to bag some of the Russian tech that crossed the borders to satisfy his sinister personal agenda.

Within days, the Russian government is aware of the disapperance of some of the tech, and blames the nation's militia, un aware of America's involvment.

Within months, Russian historians 'discover' that the nation was never truly declared independant. Russia uses this as justification for another intervention, claiming their 'rightful' land. America turns a blind eye.

Days into the Russian intervention, Russian troops are encountering unexpected heavy resistance. Their troops are being slaughtered by Guerilla tactics, obviously orchestrated by a highly trained power.

Russia captures one of these leaders, which is a member of the Black Ops ground that bagged the Russian technology. This Black Ops commando is not an American soldier, but a mercenary contracted by a large PMC in America.

The American president finds out, and in fear of bad publicity for his involvement in this, he secretly issues a Senator in charge of a sub-commitee to go through with a CIA operation that will 'silence' the mercs. He also black mails executives at the merc company into not telling the public, as these agents have gone rogue and agree that this is the only solution.

The operation goes through without a hitch... almost...

I can't spoil how it ends, but there you go.

Ideas?

I honestly don't know what to tell you. The story seems solid. I'd be more worried about finishing the story before naming it.

I like the sound of it, though it would need a bit of development to make it into an interesting story all the way through.

Smoke and Mirrors?

Blind Gambit?

Red vs Blue? (joke)

That's all I can think of right now. I might add some more later.

Regarding the story though: That's pretty solid. With my piqued interest in the military recently, this is probably something I'd pick up to read. It gives off a slight CoD vibe that attracts me to the story.

EDIT: Grab For Power?

Smoke and Mirrors sounds good to me, though you may want to make it into a play on words in relation to your story.

That's what I was trying to do for them. Since it seems the whole book is about everything being done behind everyone's back, I was trying to think of a title to fit.

Oooo, Behind The Curtain(s)?

Behind Your Back?

No Such Thing As A Fair Trade?

I don't know. I'm probably just pulling these out of my butt now.

The main issue I see from your brief summary is... I'm not on anybody's side.

Russia is keeping life saving technology to themselves. America is engaging in black ops. And the mercenaries are... mercenaries - I don't have anything particularly for or against them. And the CIA squad sent to stop them is just a mission oriented group.

You need to extremely quickly establish the mercenaries as being the protagonists (even if they're villain protagonists) with strong characterization. Otherwise you'll quickly fall prey to the story just being "a bunch of stuff that happens."

The other option is strongly characterizing both the Russian and American leadership as two sides of the same coin. Two bitter dogs of war biting at each other in a game of chess. That can work, but it's much harder to pull off than a "let's be on the side of the rogue mercenaries!" story (which is hard enough in and of itself).

That is exactly what we were planning on.

@ Talen: Smoke and Mirrors sounds really good. I'll bring that to my friend.

Laughing Well, it was just meant as a joke, but if you actually do get it published, I wouldn't mind giving you my real name. For serious!

Democrat in office actually defeats a foreign power? WTF

Also, Germany needs to somehow become an new evil power and ally itself with Russia... 'tis awesome.

And France needs to get blown apart.

In office from 1945-1953.

He's an "old democrat". Back when party ideologies were flipped (Before the 60's).
