If we still have a collectables threads it's way way way buried and not worth necroing.

I try to avoid spending money on collectables (I've made an exception for a ForceFX lightsaber), but Gentle Giants is about to combine three of my favorite things - The original Star Wars trilogy, characters with beards, and Clone Wars style animation.

It's just... too... awesome.

Not released yet - but when it is, I think I can kiss 90 of my dollars goodbye (probably an even 100 with shipping).

Cool, looks good.

Me, I could never really get into the action figure scene. Razz

I believe someone is confusing 6 dollarish "action figures" which, if you're over the age of... I don't know, let's say 14? are insanely nerdy and invoke desires to collect every single darn one. With "collectable statuettes" which are still insanely nerdy, but are so damned expensive that youngin's can't buy them and can be justified with the phrase "I'll sell it on Ebay for a fortune in 20 years!"

(Wee! Large images, spoiler tagged to prevent page-disruption)

I actually remember that one, because it was one of those action figures that made me think about "What would Star Wars be like if it had been filmed really, really, really, low budget?"

The answer in that case, of course, was that the carbonite wouldn't melt away in a shiny red glow. Instead, Leia would swing the Carbonite block away from the wall like a door, and simply snap Han out of his restraints behind it.

Spoiler:

Ahh, those good old days of super-muscly action figures.

It appears they've gotten a good deal more realistic over the years.

Spoiler:

And, while we're talking about Han - they also released another Star Wars Original Trilogy in Clone Wars Style item on Friday apparently.
Spoiler:

Neat, but there's no way I'd spend $35 on it. If they put out an Old Ben one, I suppose I'd be obligated to buy it to match my little statuette, which, after sleeping on it - I'm still intent on buying.

If you do consider buying one, make sure it's not an "Anakin Skywalker: Attack of the Clones" or the "Luke Skywalker: Return of the Jedi (from before 2005 or so, when they made a better version).

Those two were the very first ones they made and are vastly inferior to the later models.

Your best bet would probably be the "Luke Skywalker: A New Hope" - since I think that was the last full-size blade they made (Yoda's was made after, I think, but it's a shorter blade), so it's hilt is very lightweight and the blade is very durable.

I myself have the Anakin Skywalker Revenge of the Sith edition. I'll probably end up picking up a red one after Hasbro starts their rereleasing of the Master Replica models later this year (Master Replicas lost their license at the end of 2007 - so Hasbro is taking over production of Force FX).

I will consider buying one because there are just to cool to miss.
About the Master Replicas lossing there license at the end of 2007, That explains why on the Force FX Lightsaber site they said they had limited amount of stock and they weren't making any more.

and thanks for the heads up Rive.

Well, you should probably add more for tax, depending where you are...

But it's ok, we're contributing to the economy! No more stagflation! WHEE!

I don't really see why people get collectibles, they'll probably turn to dust in 15-40 years. O_o

Dust? In 15 to 40 years?

I've got some junk toys that are over 40 years old that weren't even designed to last. Little robots and such from the 1960's. Except for a few scratches and a bit of color fading, they look like they could have been made last week.

ForceFX is a bit different - I bought that because it's awesome. Mine has more than a few scratches on it. But I don't care because I have no intention to sell it Very Happy

I think the whole reason for buying collectibles can be split into two categories.

The first one is that you can say to your friends and for your own pleasing that you have some rare collectibles from the Star Wars trilogy like a Darth Vader, Luke or Solo action figure. They can also can be used for your enjoyment as well.

The seconed one is that you know he item will grow in value (if you leave it in its orignal packaging).
